I was wondering if some of you folks have purchased the 780 yet and whats your opinion of it.

I have a little GAS problem and could use some help. Nikon has a sale right now and the 780 is priced pretty close to the 750.

Thanks,

The 780 is a much better equipped camera than the 750 except for only having one slot. Other than that it has group autofocus a better processing engine and better low light capability. I think there are other improvements but I haven't read lately. I personally shoot a D500.

I have the D780 and love it. I had a 750 and loved the pictures but the controls could be cumbersome for me. Over the years I've had a half dozen or more operations repairing injuries to my hands so the ergonomics are important to me. The touch screen on the 780 is a dream come true. It can control settings, menus, playbacks etc etc. The customizable menu and button settings are great and the menu appears to be more complete and easier to use.

The image quality is easily as good as the 750 and possibly a shade better but I have only had it for a couple of months and it is too early to say for sure---but it is at least as good.

The autofocus system is outstanding and has worked great for moving wildlife shots. The faster maximum shutter speed comes in handy and the video is far better than the 750. I don't shoot much video but the options available offer a good selection of setups.

Both cameras seem to be about the same size and weight but I haven't taken a micrometer to them. The greatly improved weather sealing is a plus for me becuz I frequently shoot a lot outside and far from shelter.

I do not miss the built in flash but I only used it once or twice a year as a fill flash outdoors. However I do miss the infrared remote shutter release. I don't like being tethered by cable to the camera. I have been trying to us the wi/fi or Bluetooth to control the 780 but this will take some more practice as there seem to be some software conflicts that I still have to resolve.

I should mention that in between the 750 and 780 I had a Sony mirrorless and quickly learned to hate it. The picture quality was not bad but the controls were too small and too close together to operate quickly and comfortably. Also, the mirrorless viewfinder left much to be desired for me. Too slow, unclear compared to the optical DSLR cameras. The viewfinder was very, very difficult to see in brightly lit situations outdoors so I would be guessing at the settings---or even the picture framing. Also, the small mirrorless with a big zoom lens makes the camera front heavy and unbalanced and cumbersome to use. The mirrorless zoom was very heavy.

Some of the new features like image stacking and in camera double exposure might be of interest to you and the in-camera HDR performance appeared somewhat improved to me. Those features are handy to have when you need them.

The D780 has some of the features of a mirrorless camera that I liked and they do work well and come in handy on the 780. Definitely the 780 is the best of both worlds.

Even though I bought on sale because of a good trade in offer I wondered if I was wasting money giving up the Sony for it. I traded in an old digital camera with a serial number of about 3 and still got a good price for it.

I quickly learned that I made the right choice when I went to the 780. No doubt about it. What works and is important or useful for me might not be the same for you but since you are familiar with the 750 my thought is Go for it. You will be happy. I hung onto my 750 by the way cuz it is probably be best backup I could have.

Maybe I am misunderstanding you but the D780 has two SD slots.

Nikon run out of D750 so they don't need to sell them any more.

The D780 has dual card slots just like the D750.

The 750 used an expeed 4 processor, the 780 uses the expeed 6 processor. Nikon does use Sony sensors in some of their camera's but the processor, where the REAL ACTION IN IMAGE QUALITY happens, Nikon designs and manufactures. So, the expeed processor in the 780 is two generations newer than the one in the 750.
If the price is similar, this info might make a difference to you.

Nikon RAN out of D750's, so they don't need to sell them any more.

If money doesn’t matter, get the 780. It is a newer technology than the 750 and has better low-light high-ISO performance. I had the same option a while back and chose the D750. The 780 specs out better but the 750 is still one fine camera. The 780’s AF system is very good particularly in terms of subject tracking. Also, with the newer technology the D780 should produce JPEGs that are cleaner, better sharpening and slightly better colors. It has on-sensor phase detection which provides distance info to quickly drive DDS,T lenses.
Some of the negatives to the 780 is No Flash. Something else that is often overlooked is that there is no connectors to allow for an accessory grip. There is nothing on the base of the camera and nothing in the battery compartment..
D780 or D 750? I shoot mostly stills and have never had the need for improved AF tracking, So, while the 780 offer “some” improvements, it wasn’t enough to justify the extra cost. Love the D750.

The D780 is undoubtedly more advanced, but I'm sticking with my D750. I like the dual slots and the pop-up flash.

Thanks,
That was a great sales pitch, the kind I was looking for.
The wireless release gone and replaced by a cable, plus the missing built in flash are the two things that give me pause if for no other reason than having to carry a small flash and a cable release take up valuable space in may camera bag.
Thanks again

Well, that's good news. If it had only one, I would not buy it. Too risky if a card should fail. Unlikely the slot should fail but a card - yes, it could fail. I have my D750 set up for dulicates.
But I am giving some thot to selling/trading my Nikon gear and staying with my Fujifilm XT2 and perhaps upgrading to the XT4. At my age I cannot see keeping two entirely different systems - Nikon and Fujifilm.

I love your philosophy. I just turned 75 and find it hard to just walk to the car. I now give my things to kids. That said I still drive the lawn equipment, service the equipment, vacuum the house, and wash dishes. What I would really like to do is go hunting, fish a trout stream, tend a garden, take a cruise and walk the port stops. Live life while you can and don't just collect things.
