Macro: Adjusted focusing rail

I am thinking of going into more macro work and have been looking at automated [adjusted] focus rail. I know as a beginner I would not need all the bells and whistles, so I have been looking at the WeMacro rail package. I would like any advise, both from users of this model or any other models. I am not able to go out as much as I would like but this is something I can do no matter what the weather or my medical condition.

Any advice or help would be very helpful. One question to ask, maybe off topic, but what type of holders, either home made of bought do you use to hold or stabilize large to small flowers, etc.

Thank you all in advance, as I know the information I will receive put me on the right trail!!

I don't have a rail but menu holders are useful to hold small flowers or the like but you cannot adjust the angle with these - only straight up. There are some specialised for macro that grip the edge of the table and the angle can be adjusted.

Brenda, thank you for such a quick response. I have tried to make macro grip stands, trying to keep them small and still have weight is a challenge. I have seen so that clamp to the table then have an adjustable are to a smaller clamp, but I think the are a bit overpriced. I will keep looking and questioning.
Thank you Brenda.

@Sippy has a WeMacro rail and gets awesome stacking results. I would get one, but I’ve had enough GAS lately to last a while.

Look at macro posts by "sippyjug". He is one of our resident stacking mavens.
He shows and explains his work in detail.
Some others use much simpler methods.
Go back a year or more and work forward. You can see the learning process in their methods.
Enjoy.

I have this rail. It works very well indeed.

Up to 1:1 magnification you can use the focus motor in your lens to do focus stacking. I use Helicon remote for my Nikon. My Olympus has this built into the camera. 1:1 and greater you must use the rail for satisfactory results. I also have manual rail (Sunwayfoto). I use this for low mag work outside. No stacking in this case.

I have been experimenting with macro for a few years - my budget for my photo equipment is quite small so it has been a slow process of putting together a decent/working macro kit. reversed lens, tubes, bellows, lights (of all kinds) several defusers and of course a 4 direction rail that truly aids in getting a good focus for stacking - I have not done much stacking but have been very happy with my results to the point of buying a newer
more more precise/stable/ all metal rail - it is in the mail.
I have only recently had nerve enough to try hand held macro with a 50 mm macro - yes 1:1 worked well but the higher magnification I know I will be using good solid table top equipment with a tripod.

I hate to resurrect an old thread, but I just noticed the WeMacro motor driven focus rail kit is on sale for $299.

I have used another type of this 3rd hand tool but this one looks like it will work better and can go on field trips with my other 2 tons of camera kit stuff aka "Gas"
Ya I ordered it.
