I am about to receive my new canon eos r and adaptor. I understand that the adaptor allows both EF and EFS lenses to be mounted. Given that EFS lenses are designed for a APS cameras, will I get vignetting if I use an EFS lens? Any other impact? Although I have a full compliment of L lenses, I thought the 18-200 would make a good walk-around lens thoughts? Thank you.

The integration that is this all Canon set-up will allow the camera to automatically detect the EF-S lens and crop the resulting image to match to the smaller image circle of the EF-S lens. Although the lenses will work flawlessly, the resulting 1.6 crop will yield a file of a maximum resolution of 4176 x 2784 pixels, that's 11.6MP or roughly the resolution of circa 2005 EOS Rebel XTi.

The magic that is an EOS R-mount body is not a 30MP sensor, you can get that via EOS 5DIV or EOS 90D DSLRs. It's not even the seamless use of the EF / EF-S lenses on the same / single camera (along with even older FD/FL lenses with a different adapter). Rather, the 'magic' comes with the insane sharpness of RF lenses and the full integration of the mirrorless lenses with the mirrorless body and with the camera's Electronic View Finder (EVF).

The lens I use the most on the Canon R is a 24-70 mm f2.8 lens. Over the years I have found most of my shots have been in that range. All but one of my lenses are EF and the EF-S has never been on my R camera. Can’t help you there. Enjoy your R it is fantastic in low light.

Thank you. As I said I have some great lenses including the 16-35 Lf4, 24-105 L ii and the 100-400 ii, so I should be fine without using the additional lenses, I guess I will just sell them. Thank you for your advice.

I have a list of 'great' EF lenses to sell for their even better RF counter parts. Go with both feet is my advice. I plan to keep a few EF lenses only to retain the ability to shoot film in my EOS body. Otherwise, it will be an all mirrorless future. If I didn't have the film desires, I'd sell everything that had a better mirrorless option.

I am keeping my 5D mkiv at least for now. So I will keep my L lenses, but depending how the world unfolds if I fall in love with mirrorless, I may limit myself to mirrorless and get rid of the old technology (except for BIF where my 7dmkii and Tamron 150-600 are splendid

I think the R5 is going to break the migration dam followed by some form of RF 100-500.

If you need more lens adapters for your Canon "R", I have several that stay my most used lenses, check out the Canon store. https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/refurbished-mount-adapter-ef-eos-r. They have a great deal on refurb adaptors and they work great.

I kept my 5DIV when I bought my R. Kept it, but never used it so I finally sold it. No regrets. I also had a bunch of EF L lenses. Sold them also and replaced them with RF. Also no regrets. All are magnificent. (The RF 85 f/1.2 L is exceptional). I only kept my EF 100 f/2.8 L Macro and my EF 100-400 L II because I am waiting to see what RF lenses will replace them. Your EF lenses will all work as well or better on the R compared to the 5DIV, in large part because of the superior auto-focus performance of the R. Now I am just waiting for the R5 reviews to start coming in after it is released. I can safely say that I will never go back to a DSLR.

Those who hold onto their DSLRs, do not notice their mirrors are their chains.

What would I lose, f anything, using my 100-400MM II with a 1.4 extender with the adapter on the R? Or better yet, how much better would an RF lens in the same range be?

As I understand you can even use a 2x iii extender with relatively little loss!!

You don't 'lose' anything. In fact, the EOS-R body will autofocus with the 2x on the 100-400, so that's a gain.

The point is the already great EF / EF-S lenses remain 'great' when mounted to the mirrorless body via the Canon adapter. The difference is the different results of the RF lenses, where the RF version exists for the same focal length. The RF lenses are designed specifically for the higher pixel density sensor, just like all of Canon's series II & III L lenses. For the ultra-fast f/1.2 - f/2 lenses, these are all as sharp wide-open as the stepped down apertures of their EF sisters and brothers. The RF lenses are also integrated into the mirrorless systems with rings and buttons to control the display in the mirrorless EVF.

While I agree with most of what has been posted in this thread and I do love the EOS R but I seem to be having a problem with my 100-400 vII while birding. It’s mainly a focusing issue while filling active birds. Trouble getting focus and maintaining it. Am I doing something wrong. No problem when using it on my 6D.
