Saw this last evening as the sun was going down...

I am always drawn to backlighting and there is much potential here. For me the background is currently distracting from the gorgeous subjects. If you can shoot again, try standing further back and using that zoom. With my Canon sx50 that was how I found it easiest to blur the background.

The other option, for this particular image, would be post-processing. If you're not a fan, I understand

Thank you for your comments, Linda. I did quite a bit of cloning and healing but the background was still a problem. I'll watch it this evening and try your advice.

Thanks again.

Very nice shot, Ed! I always have problems with whether I want to just show the flower, place it in its environment or some blend. I understand your choice with your shot.

I love the light on the flowers. I'm not sure that the darkest areas of the shot are doing you any favors. I think, along with Linda's suggestion, if you are going to re-shoot, you might try bracketing your exposure. The flowers would be the same; but there would be some useful detail in the leaves. Just a thought.

I am going to have to learn to keep quiet when a "solution" is beyond my pp capabilities

Linda,
I thought about an all black BG but didn't think it would work well.
Thanks for your great input.

Thanks, Erich. I will keep your advice in mind if the sun behaves this evening.

Here is another attempt. Same bush, different blossom head. The sun gods didn't cooperate very well this evening but the backlighting on this one isn't bad. I took Linda From Maine's advice and vacked off some and paid better attention to the background.

I personally much prefer this shot of your flowers. Much more “textures” to the pedals. The flowers are the star of the shot not the background.
