Beautiful morning on the Hudson River yesterday. Went upriver to the Port Of Coeymans. Came across a tug and barge stopped in mid-channel. Just holding steady against the current. About a mile further I saw the reason. A large bulk carrier was being un-docked in Coeymans, blocking the channel. Even though it was unloaded and ready to go downriver it first had to go 10mi or so upriver to the Port Of Albany turning basin because the channel is too narrow at Coeymans to turn a ship of that size. For a comparison, enlarge the last photo and look at the fisherman in the 17' fishing boat. The river was flat calm but if you look at photo #6 you can see how a tug at full power will actually pile up the water behind it. Taking tows on the Dismal Swamp Canal years ago I could stand on the bow and watch the water being pulled off of the shore ahead of us and standing on the stern I could only see tree tops on the shore because the boat would squat so much when working hard.

It's nice when you have experience with the subject your photographing.
