D500
Sony 120 professional XQD card.
I took a significant amount of wildlife photos yesterday at the lake. Ospreys, geese, ducks, etc.
The camera was recording. I previewed periodically for correct settings. When I put the card in the reader and USB port all images were gone.
I put the card back into the camera and confirmed the card was empty.
I'm wondering where and why they went away. Don't want a repeat of that. I was excited to see the shots I got. Thanks in advance to the expert Hoggers responses. I'm

Not familiar with your camera, but first thing that comes to mind, is what happened with my son's camera: same setting, took lots of pictures, but card empty.
All the photos were in the camera! Can't remember what camera he was using, but you could choose to have the photos recorded on the camera system or on a card.

Check your "primary slot selection" setting. If you had it set for SD card your photos are on that card. If you didn't have an SD card inserted then you accidentally formatted your XQD card. That's all I can think of. Sure hope you find your shots.

Did you check to see that you didn’t accidentally flip the “lock” tab on the XQD card? I’m not positive there is actually such a thing on an XQD card, but SD cards do have a tab that can moved to a lock position so that images cannot overwrite the card.

That’s not how the D500 works, though.

I thought I had the same issue once and it turned out the images were on the second card.

How could MORE protection have been the problem ?

I just looked at my XQD card and I couldn't see any lock switch.

I don't believe the person who posted that to which you replied mentioned MORE protection.

He mentioned the possibility of the lock switch being in the lock position, which would have prevented the camera from writing data to the card. However, That was a possibility except for the fact that I don't believe that feature is on an XQD card.

If using Windows, may have a pop-up appear when you connected the card telling there was an issue with the card and offer to fix it?
I never accept that pop-up, but see it a couple times and I guess it may automatically format de card.

Again, if using Windows, you can try to run Recuva (free app) and see if it can recover the images.

Good luck.

Bob, thanks for confirming that there’s no lock switch/tab on XQD cards. I was nowhere near mine to check. Also, thanks for setting UserID straight. He seems to have reading comprehension issues!

Thanks everyone. All are possibilities. (Except for the lock on XQD card).
I put the card back in the camera and got the same response. No images on this card. I did have a SD in the other slot but they weren't on it. I will check windows. I didn't see anything download while I tried reading the card. Unfortunate but I may have a bad card. I'll use the SD for now. Thanks again

Check the setup for the camera (D500). If it takes SD and XQD like the Nikon D850, are the camera settings set up to recognize both card slots? And do you use the XQD first with the SD card as overflow? Or as a dual download of all images to both cards?
