This is a good explanation of the FMJ bullet found after it had penetrated 2 people- however the round that left fragments in his scull and brain cavity most likely came from a reloaded/salvaged cartage with the lead core hunting round- reloads are quite available around gun ranges . Anyone doing much shooting is always looking for the cheaper ammunition - reloads are cheap.

Oswald used only surplus Carcano 6.5mm ammunition. All the casings found in the book depository were from military loads. The Carcano was loaded using Berdan primers, as was common in Europe. Reloading Berdan-primed ammo was labor intensive, and the primers and tooling were very scarce in the early 60's.

As mentioned, the projectile would fragment upon hitting bone, and the round entered the top of Kennedy's skull, exiting above the front hairline.

I used to go for the various conspiracies, when a youngster. But they all had odd gaps, truth be told. The best scenario is actually what the Warren commission had concluded. The best documentary about all this that i know is an episode of NOVA from many years ago. You can find it online, and I recommend people watch it. I will just add:
1. With that rifle, a person with Oswalds' training will easily fire off 3 shots, with good accuracy, in the time that Oswald had. Despite all the conspiracies that say otherwise, it is completely demonstrated in a reenactment in the documentary. In the assassination, the first shot hits the pavement alongside the car. That is not often mentioned. And a person with Oswalds' training easily does better than what Oswald did. Period.

2. The rifle and bullets were very unusual. Full metal jacket bullets, and the shells were very long and give incredible muzzle velocity. A bullet from that kind of rifle goes through many feet of solid wood. I am not kidding! Easily goes thru 2 people like butter. The bullets readily tumble, though, and when they do they don't disintegrate. They flatten! Like the bullet found later on the stretcher. Again, all reproduced in the documentary. So all that conspiracy about how bullets are supposed to mushroom or break apart are not true in the case of tumbling bullets. That is a finding that was not appreciated for a long time.

I could go on. But that documentary totally laid it to rest for me. Oswald did it. It was his rifle, his place of work, all shots were fired from the book depository, and so on. Oswald did not need any one to help him.
