It's hard to answer that question without a picture of what exactly you are trying to accomplish and what the problem area looks like.
OK, I'll attempt to attach it. I don't completely know how to use thforum but i'll try. Where is the add photo section?

If your going to get serious about masking. I would recommend the OnOne Perfect Mask plugin. It also works standalone. Cost $99 or $84.99(if your a member of NAPP). Many pro compositors use this. I think Topaz now has a plugin as well. Masking has improved in PS over the years especially beginning in CS5. Its just quicker and easier with the Perfect Mask Plugin.
I am not sure that I would have attempted to isolate that cat prior to Photoshop CS5. In that version, they added a feature called "Refine Edge" that does moderately well at isolating hair or fur from the background.
In your case with PS version 9, I think that I would put the cat on the background you wish to use, edit the layer the cat is on and use a very soft eraser (15 or 20%)that is about the same diameter as the stick-out length of the cat's fur and work around the edge.
Thank you very much for your reply.
I will try another shot with a plain background.
then PS9.
Thanks.

Couple of notes to supplement what PrairieSeasons Said.
All pictures are not good candidates to cutout pictures. I would not have had the cat on a closely matched background if I had intended to create a mask. An alternative to the soft erase is to use the smudge tool, with the same setup that PrairieSeasons mentions for the soft erase. Either method will work. Here is an example of a better candidate for a cutout. I did remove the hair in front of her face. I could have as easily kept it.
Original (good cutout candidate)
Background removed.
Thanks Pale....
That's what I am trying to do.
You removed the hair and cluttered background.
I am trying to get our 3 cats in 1 photo to make a Christmas card.
They won't stay together for a photo-op.
I'll try a plain background if I can get them to sit still long enough.

Masked out kitty with Topaz Remask 3 and put him on a black background since I didn't know what background you had selected for him.
Masked out on black background
Hey Patrick !
That's perfect.
I didn't have a background color in mind but that looks good to me.
So you make a layer in black, then put kitty photo on top and erase
back ground?
I have 2 more kitties to do.
Where do you get the software you used
Actually I masked the kitty out with Topaz Remask.
Opened a new blank file in PS Elements with a black fill (you can choose black, white or transparent) then you can fill either of the three with any color at all you want.
Then drag the mask of kitty from original onto the new one then flattened image and saved as jpg. Easy as pir with Remask from TopazLabs.com
You can do the same with extractor or layers but hey are not as "neat" for me as I get much choppier/messier extractions with those two methods personally.
