I have had good luck with Vello.

I don’t know the D800, but the D500 has a pretty good interval timer built in. Very easy to set up and use. MIOPS makes some really nice stuff that goes beyond just being a remote and intervalometer. I just picked up their Mobile Remote that works with a smartphone app and includes sensors for different release modes based on sound, motion and lightning. They also make units that don’t require a smartphone.

Vello ShutterBoss is the only way to go. The corded, not the wireless model. Both bodies have the same port on the body, so only 1 is required.

Both cameras have excellent intervalometers. You just have to learn how to use them. Only Canon shooters have to look beyond their cameras for intervalometers.

I have found the primary benefit of an accessory intervalometer to be the ability to do free form input of exposure times greater than 1 second, while the in-camera ones use the camera's native shutter times...1, 2, 4, 8, 15, and 30 seconds. This is not enough flexibility for night sky photography, where I regularly use 20 or 25 seconds (and yes, it does make a difference).

I use Nikon's MC-36 intervalometer on my D810 with great results. I have not used it with my D500, but it didn't seen to work quite correctly with my D850. Remote shutter release was fine, but I never got quite confident that the more advanced functions were working exactly correctly. I was shocked to see that its replacement, the MC-36A is listed at $230 on the NikonUSA site.

But the good news is that intervalometers are a lot like extreme wide angle lenses. Lots of folks think that they need them, then work to sell them when they don't get used. I paid little more than $50 for my MC-36, but have not yet shopped for a MC-36A

The native shutter speeds of 1 second or longer on my D800 and D810 are 1, 1.3, 1.6, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 13, 15, 20, 25 and 30. Which Nikon do you have that doesn't give you these exposure choices? But you are correct, if you need exposures different than the ones offered by the camera you will need an outboard intervalometer.

Gene, you are correct that shutter timing progresses in 1/3 stop increments. Don't know where that came from...possibly an earlier camera model. But there is still the problem of being limited to 30 seconds before being forced to Bulb with just the camera controlling.

Some of the Canon cameras have the intervalometer builtin. Another beautiful thing about Canon is that many of the cameras can utilize add-on firmware called "Magic Lantern". Magic Lantern can provide features absent in the Canon supplied firmware. One feature that comes to mind is "Dual ISO".

The Pluto trigger is a widget (actually two widgets) with a phone app and has a ton of features. Its only downside is that it has a rechargeable battery that goes dead when it sits in the bag for months without use. Make sure you get the one with the cable that fits your camera.
