The U.S. Navy Blue Angels performed a flyover of Chicago on May 12, 2020. The elite flight squad has been conducting flyovers in cities across the country as part of the “America Strong” campaign to thank medical professionals, emergency responders and essential workers.

The flyover was part of a salute to honor front-line workers amid the coronavirus pandemic.

'America Strong' Campaign

The Blue Angels team flies fighter aircraft which have formerly served in the United States Navy and are maintained to nearly combat-ready status. Modifications to each aircraft include removal of the weapons and replacement with the tank that contains smoke-oil used in demonstrations, and outfitting with the control stick spring system for more precise aircraft control input.

'America Strong' Campaign

Seperate and joint flyovers of cities nationwide are planned by the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds, the demonstration squadrons for the Navy and Air Force. The flyovers are planned for the next several weeks to say 'thank you' to first responders, essential personnel, and military service members as we collectively battle the spread of COVID-19.

'America Strong' Campaign

All images were captured from the shoreline of Lake Michigan, using an EOS 5DIII and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-f/5.6L IS USM II. Images were captured in RAW and processed in Adobe Lightroom v6 along with Topaz Denoise 6. EXIF data is available from the host Flickr pages as well. On the Flickr site, use the title of each image that is a URL link to the corresponding Flickr page.

Beautiful pictures and great job, giving out all the information that someone being new in photography will want to know. I will definitely want one as a screen saver. Any more pictures?.

The teams arrived together but the Thunderbirds were in the lead. Being they were directly overhead prevented me from getting a shot of both teams in the same image.

Fantastic! I saw a great demonstration from them many years ago, along with many other aircraft. These are great pictures!

I guess by the time they arrived at my location (south of Atlanta) the Blue Angels had run out of smoke? Still an awesome sight!! I encourage you to see this flyover if you have the chance.

Kudos to you, them, and our responders. Nice to see a post about the pandemic that's not political.

After the traffic to get to the site, the wait for their arrival, it was over in a matter of 10 seconds - come and gone. But definitely worth it. I shot these with a Nikon D4, 70-200 mm lens, f9, 1/1000. Post processing was with Lightroom V5, where I cropped and increased the Blue saturation. Beautiful day, local radio station simul-cast patriotic music, I shot from the parking lot of a Chick-fil-A across from a hospital, wonderful experience, made you proud to be an American.

Great photos CHG....The Navy recently signed a contract with Boeing for a block of F-18's newly retrofitted for the Blues and not having them rely on the worn out aircraft from the fleet. Now they'll get newer E & F models versus the C & D models they're currently flying....they'll only get better & better.
