Those are both spectacular, Bert.

The profile of the skyline in the second one is amazing, and the color range truly impressive.

On the first one, the sun is perfectly positioned and exposed. The only thing I don't love is the mass of the shadows in the foreground. I think I might have aimed a little higher, keeping the border just below the horizon line. You might try cropping this to a panoramic aspect ratio to accomplish the same thing? I also wouldn't mind if you cropped the right edge of the second photo just past the part of the silhouette that lies above the mesa. The perfect flatness of the table is one of the most endearing features of this image and it might be emphasized even more with a slight crop to the right. The perfect balance of the image is a strength.

But those are minor quibbles, and mostly a matter of personal taste - they are both terrific images.

Well done!
Andy

Hi, Bert
#1 gets my vote for its superb use of the set sun’s upward fan of crepuscular rays.

Nice processing on both of these.

Both are really beautiful photos. The first would be my favorite except that my eyes were immediately drawn to them clouds. I thinks it would be a more dramatic presentation if the clouds were cropped out and a bit of the bottom was cropped giving it a panoramic feel.

OK, I listened to all three suggestions for cropping and have attached the results. Any further insight?

Nice. As you probably know I really love the third one. Thanks for sharing these.

It’s good you were open to trying things.

I think it’s your art, and after trying the suggestions, I ask you, which do you like? Why?

And It’s perfectly ok if you like the originals.

Yes to this! But I have to admit that I like the edits even better. Great images!

I like the pano versions better than my originals. With respect to number one and the cropped out rock on the right, I think I like it better with it in there. It kind of provides a frame. If that part of the frame was a bit bigger, perhaps you would like it better as well.

I can't seem to make up my mind on #2, clouds or no clouds. How do you guys feel?

I can't make my mind up either. They are both spectacular. If I had to choose one to enter in a show, I'd probably use the one without.

I think that they tell two different stories. Without clouds the emphasis is on the sun and rays and the “rockscape”. It feels uplifting to me.

With the clouds my attention is divided between the texture of the clouds and the rays. It has a different feel to it, not foreboding that is too strong a word, but definitely not as uplifting.

It might be a little stronger composition without the clouds because it has a clearly defined subject. But those are just my thoughts, this is for you to decide. And by the way, nobody says you can’t like them both and keep both, they are two different pictures.
