I was taking a picture yesterday, and BBF didn't work. Decision time. Do I go online and ask the good folks on UHH why it isn't working, or do I take the matter into my own hands? I reached out and turned the focus ring. Voila! Perfect focus!

Somehow, the Auto Focus switch got moved to Manual. I'm glad my brain remembered how to focus - just like in the old days.

Except for the part that makes one forget to check the switch. A thing that I have NEVER forgotten.

Ok, ALMOST never forgotten.

Well, maybe occasionally forgotten, but never more that once a month... or week... or...

OK! I forget all the time!

I have kicked myself many times, for not checking that the AF is back on! I had fabulous shots of a heron eating a fish (I thought), and after checking and the bird was gone, they were all a blur. BOOOOO!

Yayy! The brain is still working.

I was having trouble getting the camera to focus at a wedding back in September. It was dark, in a big tent for the reception, I was bounce flashing but the focus assist light wasn’t working. I thought for a second and remembered “zone focusing” and everything came out great.

Yeah. It's that little bump you play around with while waiting to take a shot. Apparently moving it back and forth can cause focus problems. Who'dathunk?

If you continue to demonstrate independent thought like this, a review of your membership status might have to be opened.

As many posts as Jerry has, I think he could be excused..... unless he’s gone totally nuts.

Jerry is going to tell us next that his Automatic Transmission suddenly turned to manual and he saw low, second, and drive. No jerry they all have that. Jerry lives in the mountains and the air gets low on Oxygen. Perhaps delerium of the COV-2 fever or isolation.

Seriously manual has its 1/3 2/3s focus advantage. At a wedding reception, I shot the tables focusing at 10' and so was able to get all in the row in focus. The 10' was 1/3 of the way in so the rest were within the 2/3s behind focus.

Humph... some photo atheist says this is a DOF Godlike rule of thumb is only a myth... "Your total depth of field then is ... 43% is in front of the subject and 57% is behind."

Oh ho, not that simple that guy sells lenses... better detail is those guys at Cambridge:

I had a similar problem with my D850 a few months ago. Auto focus suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason. The AF/manual focus switch was right where it belonged. I tried everything for hours. It turned out I had inadvertently pushed the lens release button which in turn disconnected the auto focus mechanism even though the lens itself had not moved. A word to the wise!
