I love Blue Jays and I've been trying get some pictures for the last few years. I've gotten a few, but not what I really wanted. Thursday, I was sitting on a park bench and a few flew into a tree about 15 feet away. It appeared they were building a nest in another tree because they were breaking off twigs and flying away. They returned a number of times for more twigs. I went back yesterday and there wasn't a Blue Jay in sight.

Very good, nice shots! Glad you finally caught them. We have many in our yard, but we do maintain feeders and a birdbath. Next time (you may enjoy this, we do): Take a pocketful of peanuts in the shell. or even shelled....toss or place a few of them where the Jays can see them...before long they will be coming right up to you...like they are asking/waiting for their treat. We have daily sessions in our yard with a peanut game of "Toss the peanut" to the Blue Jays, with emphasis on them beating the squirrels to the peanut, They are really very good at the game....entertaining and photo ops for us, "two old folks hiding out in the woods" during this pand-nemesis. Great way to spend some time out in the sun and enjoy the birds, have a hot or cold beverage...take as many pics as you like, and let them entertain you.

Nice. The Bluejays on my property are very timid. Makes them hard to photograph.

Thanks, kpmac! I don't see them in the yard very often. So, I was ecstatic to get these shots.

Thanks for the tip olemikey! I don't have a feeder either. So, I just hoping to catch them when they show up. If I put out peanuts, it will be quite a fight between the Blue Jays and the Squirrels.

Good stuff, particularly with those intervening branches.

The Jays are a quick study, once they know that you are tossing one out, they will be on it immediately, flying in as you toss it!. The squirrels will actually watch the Jays for hints on where the peanut is going, and head in that direction. Fun to do, fun to watch, and the photo ops increase! Have fun!

In our yard “bluejay” and “timid” is an oxymoron. The fact that there is a gang of five I think helps their assertiveness. They don’t always have things their own way, however. Ever see a face-off between a jay and a chipmunk over a peanut? Alvin won! Of course, no camera in hand. ☹️
