Hi!
I'm trying to cut the cord & now I'm ready to buy my own modem. Did it in FL...no problem.
However, her on Long Island, NY I have Optimum and I'm seeking recommendations for a good quality modem with TELEPHONY to be used with Optimum service.
Any recommendations, as well as suggested buying sources would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about a dial-up modem?

Are you trying to get out from under their extremely, obscenely excessive, overpriced television service?
We've been looking for a while.
Over daughter switched to Sling but it has to many issues for us to brother with.
If you find something good let me know.
Thanks

I think they recommend different modems based on the level of service you select.
Have you questioned them? When I decided to stop renting a modem from Comcast, I called them. The women I spoke with went over what my needs were and then recommended 3 to choose from.

I use XFinity in Florida, just for Internet. In previous years I used a couple of HD antennas. Not satisfactory.
This year I switched to XFinity (Internet Only) and You Tube TV. I love it. Gets all my regular network stations (CBS, NBC, ABC, CW, Fox, & many more) very CLEARLY. I can't get History but I have ways around it. $56/month including taxes. Even my wife finds it easy to use. She's NOT stupid...just doesn't want to be bothered fiddling with TV stations.
Now I'm happy.

Now I'm switching over to You Tube TV on Long Island and I also want my own modem.

No, I need a modem for Internet and telephone service. I'd cut the phone service from Optimum triple play but my wife wants to keep the land line.

Yes, I did question them and they (the robot) recommended the ARIS(Sp) 1604 but I'd rather hear from someone who is tech wise before I make a decision.

Funny story about Comcast Xfinity. 3 years ago I bought their own modem. The next year I got, "That modem is no longer usable with our service!" So I rented. Bought my own modem this year. Easy as pie to set up. Looking to do the same up here.

I run a large remote worker user populations. I’ve had a very large number of problems with user purchased equipment on the various cable networks. The largest number of problems were on Comcast followed by Xinfinity. Optimum was one of the better providers.

All of the modems work about the same but there are small differences in the service provided. The result was that a given modem wouldn’t work on all of the networks. This is particularly the case with one of the more inexpensive ones and all in one units (With wireless router). All of the all-in-ones had problems with network compatibility somewhere. The ones that had telephony capabilities were the worst.

As a matter of fact many of the large companies with big work at home labor forces found that it’s cheaper to rent the modem in the long run (especially when you factor in loss of productivity).

Cable modems are a commodity business - you get what you pay for. The cheap ones are just that. More to the point they don’t handle all of the networks.

If you want to have a land line phone you should stick with the rental or look at getting service from an IP voice provider. Under the covers the cable modem phone is a IP phone, so there is little difference even in reliability. Setting up telephony can be extremely difficult even if it does work.

There is no certainty that a given set will work, especially with voice, until you try it. It could work perfectly or not at all. The support I’ve gotten from providers ranged from bad to worse to awful.

My best advice is see what has the best support from the cable company and go with it exactly.

My land line is MagicJack. It plugs into the back of the modem and replaces the built in telephony portion of the modem. The service is just as good and is using the same internet connection. My last renewal was $100 for five years. I never dreamed I could have phone service for less than $2/month. Depending where you are there may be a charge for 911 service. It is optional here. Mine is $7/year and goes to 911, not MagicJack. For convenience I bought a Panasonic base station with 4 remote handsets. Five years in and no complains.

BTW- In the early days you had to leave your computer on. Now you only need the modem.

Nope. Have a router. And a modem with telephony from Optimum.

I am using the Arris (which is the same modem that Spectrum supplies in my area). I have used it for several years with zero issues, the WiFi (both 2.5 & 5GHz) and management console work well, and the bandwidth easily handles my 200 Mb service. Boot up time is 1-2 minutes after reset. The only downside is that Spectrum requires that that you use their Modem (which is an exact duplicate) for VOIP (at no monthly cost), even though mine supports it, so I have the incoming cable split and 2 modems side-by-side - a free one from the cable company for VOIP, and my own for Internet. Works and saves the modem rental fee (which had become $10/month), but silly nonetheless.
