After 8 back surgeries including full fusion of all levels, I am no longer able to get down low to take pictures. I searched for a solution but found nothing appropriate. Then I built something very simple. It uses a pole about the size of a hiking pole and a hardwood platform. The tripod head is attached to the platform with a 1/4 x 20 screw. The platform can slide up and down the rod to the desired level. Now I can shoot low angle shots while standing upright. The entire rig cost next to nothing but solved a big problem for me. Hope others find this useful.
Good idea but how do you handle composition? And do you use a remote trigger to trip the shutter?
The lcd panel flips to a horizontal position do I can see the composition. Yes, I use a cable shutter release which has the focus half- press capability,

Great idea! You made you won "LOW HAT" (see image)- A camera mount originally made for cinematography for low angle shots.
If anyone wants to make one or something like it, they can buy a part made by Manfrotto. You can mount it on wood, bolt it to any support via a 1/4 x 20 or 3/8 x 16 sockets at the base. A camera or light can be attached by means of the Manfrotto standard hexagonal quick release plate. I also attach mine to a Manfrotto Magic Arm- an articulated arm/clamp that is extremely versatile.

That's a good idea! Why didn't I think of that? I too have back problems, only nowhere near as severe as yours. But from time to time I get gigs shooting food for restaurants to put on their menus. And that can require a lot of contortions. I will build myself on. I hope you get a patent on it.
