I spend a lot of time on my front porch doing the two things that are relaxing. Photographing birds and reading. This week is Dr Zhivago. The weather is mostly nice here and that helps a lot.

There is more difference than I thought there would be. I can handhold the 500 for about 21 pictures before it gets too heavy. The 400 is a lot lighter. I can take pictures for about half an hour before I feel the weight.

I use a 1.4 and a 2x extender with the lenses. There is a big difference in the reach I get. I prefer the 500 here.

When I sit on my front porch I rest the 500 lens on my knee for support and that works pretty well. When walking around with it I have it on a monopod and that works well.

Bottom line: I am glad I have both lenses. My wife is too. She likes using the 400.

Image quality: both are excellent. I would hate to have to choose between them if I could only have one

How do I spend my time?
My wife thinks up activities for me to pursue.
When I can avoid her, I am polishing my limited skills writing Python.
I have to build a workbench in the basement so I have one place to keep my tools rather than having them spread over two acres. The basement is filled with quasi-useful stuff (a.k.a. Junk) so I had to find some open space to fill.
I sewed patches on some old pants so I don’t have to wear my good clothes in quarantine.
I took a set of shots of a small awl to look at the effect of diffraction as a function of f/ number. That also fit in with the Python study.
Built some tools to help plant the garden.
Baked some bread.
Reseeded the lawn.
Planted 3 peach trees (requiring digging holes in what passes for soil in New England).

Looks like a great way to spend the time. Since the good weather and the migrants haven’t arrived quite yet, i have retreated to the basement and put together the home recording studio that I had always had on my «  to do » list, and have been collaborating with other musicians on various songs. Can’t wait to get outside, though!

I go to work every day have meetings, review others work, make corrections and return, visit hospitals to help with issues of spaces.
Keep very busy.
Look forward to weekends and taking time to myself.

Our granddaughter came over a couple of weeks ago for wine time. I fixed hers and set it on the porch. We had ours in the foyer and talked thru the glass storm door.

As I near 68 years of age, I keep active: I walk the desert looking for arrowheads, pottery sherds, critters, plants and anything else that I find interesting. I often grab my metal detector and find a place to look for lost "treasures". I take short 3-4 mile round trip hikes up the mountain and back and of course I enjoy my photography as well. I also help out watering/weeding the Desert Garden in the local State Park that we're volunteering at. Life is good.

It's lying right there. See it?

Growing up in the desert of AZ you could not walk without walking on pottery and other artifacts.
There were 2 very large Hohokam communities not far from the house in the Agua Fria river that had not been explored. then out of the basin they had a fort on a round hill over looking the villages. The adjacent cliffs to the villages were totally covered with hieroglyphs . It was fascinating and spent many summers exploring the area.

So what are you doing staying home sporting a 700mm lens -- remote peeping tom with your neighbors?

How do you get Dr. Zhivago to pose?
