I saw this on the side of a telephone pole. Having never seen one, I was unsure what it is or its purpose. It looks like a bottle opener. LOL. The pole lines an old street that is no longer used for travel by car. Any help identifying and/or information on it would be appreciated! I did check a few other poles but none have one. This one happens to be the center pole of about 8 that line the old road.

The telephone companies put steps on some poles that technicians climb frequently for repair/installation work. They don't take the steps all the way to the ground for fear someone will climb and get hurt. They put an attachment near the bottom of the pole where the first 2 steps would be placed and the technicians have a pair of steps that they keep on the truck that attaches to the bottom 2 brackets. This looks like it could be an attachment for a step although, they have a different style now.

My first look at this told me, "Hey! This looks like an Egyptian artifact that somebody nailed to a pole!" Then i thought it looks like a bottle opener SHAPED like an Egyptian artifact! THEN i noticed the shadow connecting the "head" to the opener. So i'm wondering, did you intend for this to look like an Egyptian artifact? Does anyone else see this? Could be a good "mind bender" illusion, yes?

Would that bracket hold a 200 lb. person?

Yes, they hold large technicians with their belt and equipment all the time! It is just a step, not something they stand on for long periods of time while they work.

Come to think of it, if it was a stay anchor it probably would have at least that much pull on it.

Yes, I remember them from when I was young. The poles near schools sometimes had several sets of them up the pole to keep determined imitation monkeys from going up the poles.
