I plugged my Western Digital external drive into the USB port and now receiving a prompt that it must be partitioned. But if partitioned, I will loose the previously stored data. Does anyone know how to get around this prompt?

No, but I can usually get help from UHH users!

Tell us more. Is it full, is there a pop-up and what does it say? Anything more might be helpful in diagnosing the problem.

You could try diskpart. Right-click on the Start button, select Run and enter diskpart. Then type list disk, and you're off to a start. It will show you what disks it sees, and you can get the syntax for other commands by typing help. This program can do an awful lot.

Digital cameras are computer accessories. You have to learn How to master the whole enchilada. Thus, we get computer questions.

Everything — He needs the drive to store images.

Oh, granted, this could go in the General Chit Chat section, but it would not have the same broad exposure.

There is a prompt pop up stating the need to partition, and the drive is nowhere near full.

Run Check Disk or (on a MAC) Disk First Aid (from Disk Utility).

You may need to run a third party disk repair utility. The catalog or file allocation table may be corrupted.

The most common cause of this problem is unplugging the USB cable while the disk is mounted on your desktop. Unmounting hard drives is not optional if you like your data.

Power failure can also cause this issue, especially if the disk was writing or caching data.

You either have a corrupted partition table or a corrupted Master Boot Record - in not so rare occasions you could have both. Using Diskpart on a Windows machine will likely fix the problem Ore you can use a third party application like Easus.
