Backing up LightRoom files on an external drive using Mac

I am looking for advice on how this is done. I used to be able to drag the new file onto the old (back-up version) and let file management do its thing. I just tired doing this and got a dialogue box telling me it wanted to add the entire file as new, and it needed additional space. I must have missed something but can't figure out what. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Backing up to an external drive is just an everyday event for most of us. You need to get a backup program. There are lots of them out there. This will only write files that have changed. You shouldn’t be doing this drag and drop style. I use carbon copy cloner. Quick and easy. I’m backing up something pretty much every day.

Always backup, create new directories and manage files from within Lightroom. I have 3 external hard drives that I can access within lightroom and Lightroom will handle all the file management for you. If you go outside of lightroom and move files around Lightroom will not know where to look for them. There are plenty of good YouTube instructional videos about this subject.

Your answer sent me to L/R files where back-up resides. Thanx, big help.

Since you are using a MAC, use Time Machine for backups, you can specify what files to back up. It is a sequential backup so it only adds new files to your backup.

I use apple Time Machine For two externals and 4getabotit! I use a 4T G and and old 1T Time Capsule. Be sure to select only the folders and contents you want and the frequency of your backups in time machine setup. Recommend G drives over other Apple ready drives. Speed of transfer is not a main factor because you schedule it. Been doing this for 8 years until my Lacie broke after 6 years. I still use apple time capsule as a second backup going on 8 years but not sure if that is supported any more. Also use a Cloud for off site(Amazon Prime pkg). Been using a 1 T External G for my main working drive off the Mac Book Pro for about 9 years. I should replace with a SSD as i am on borrowed time on my working drive. Be safe!

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up. I back up to 3 external drives, belt and suspenders. Easy to use and the program has great reviews. It only adds to your drives, does not replicate with every backup.

WRONG again, my friend! I call Nikon when I have a problem with a Canon and Canon when I have a problem with Apple. Everyone else here knows only too well that you call General Motors when you have a problem with the Light in your Room! Dummy!!

For Mac users, Apple includes a terrific backup program called Time Machine for backup. I happen to keep my Time Machine backups on a Synology NAS server. Best of luck.

When you're 'backing up' in LR, you're not backing up your photos, you're only backing up your Catalog files. Don't be confused about that, or you'll get yourself in trouble at some point.
