Peep Hole

Peep Hole was a shot actually taken the way it is shown. I took two shots focusing on the model in one and the hole in the wall in the other and put them together in post. Another shot from the abandoned Michigan Train Depot in Detroit.

Just fabulous. Of all things the hair partially over her eye makes it even better.

What would have been even much better would be to have the wall part be out of focus

That would have been like one of the shots that I took. Very blurry blob around the figure. I thought the graffiti on the wall would be interesting to show. Also, I tried a couple of versions of making the hole in the wall area very light and very dark. Both ways worked to focus more attention on the model. But, I went with an exposure on the middle tone side to make the entire composition of equal weight and interest.

I would think that a a bit out of focus but not completely blurred (as a blob like you described) would work. It is easy to try as you have it as a composite

Easy would have been a single shot with a blurry foreground. But no amount of depth of field would also bring the foreground into a soft focus as you are suggesting. For me to achieve that I can just blur the foreground now. Let me think about it. I am not a soft focus guy.

Your suggestion. Not bad. I like it. I left the edges of the hole sharp. Thanks.

Well done - like this a lot more. You can even experiment with darken/lighten the "peephole" foreground to see what balance between foreground/background works best

That train station is a national photographers treasure. Should be declared off-limits for restoration or at least one floor should be set aside for photography... nude of course.

Great photo ... great layering.

Both are rather good, as usual, however - I like the first one the best. To my eye, the blurred frame is distracting.
