I travel extensively. Currently I post my photos on Facebook with a short story (blog?) about the day/event or whatever the photo series is about. I then caption each photo with a story or explanation about what the photo is of. Usually I post about a dozen photos. For example on a recent trip to Antarctica I did a story about the mornings excursion with photos, then a day or two later I would post the afternoons excursion. As you can imagine, having someone go back to my Timeline on Facebook to see my photos is very awkward. They need to scroll down experiencing the trip backwards and then sorting out the different days experiences from other photos I have posted along the way. Some examples of captions attached.

What I am searching for is a Website that will let me easily create a category for say Tibet, Antarctica, Cuba, Chile, etc.... with then my stories and multiple captioned photos. So far the only site I have seen that actually advertises the ability to caption photos is SMUGMUG. Anyone with experiences with SMUGMUG or other sites that let you showcase your travels or photos in this manner. If you wish to share your site for an example that would be excellent. Thanks in advance everyone.

First off, nice photos! We were there in January and I can only say it was magical. If you’re wanting a blog type site, try Google. I put up a free blog site there years ago and am probably going to transform it to a photo site. I am not sure how many photos I can upload before they want me to pay for storage, so I have not done so yet. Here is a link to a help page that can answer some questions and I believe has a link in it to set up an account.

https://support.google.com/blogger/answer/1623800?hl=en

Just if you are curious, here’s a link to some of my shots. Good luck and happy shooting!

Short of creating your own Blog post, our Boyscout Troop uses Shutterfly.

Here's an example of a site I created years ago and have never really used it.

Hope this helps
Steve

P.S. Beautiful Shoots

What you are asking is a turn key solution or something customized to your needs?

Turnkey = web sites hosting you
Customized = web site you create using software that can be highly customizable. This mean registering your web site name (godaddy by example) and an ISP who will host your (virtual) server.

Of the two, if you are not computer/internet literate the turnkey is the solution. It is also the least time consuming option - if not the least expensive -.

If you have your own web site using an ISP you can anything you want from a blog, a forum, a static informative web site, a sales point, name it. But time and learning is the essence.

The real difficulty is *ahem* exposure as being advertised. This is poorly done. regardless of the solution adopt unless you pay for advertising that is and even then...

Are you a subscriber to the Adobe Photographer's bundle of Lightroom and Photoshop? If you are, then you can build a website for free on Adobe's My Portfolio. You can caption photos, though I don't know what length restrictions there are on captions. There are a number of website styles to choose from. A link to my Adobe site should appear at the bottom of this post.

Good idea Dan, never thought of it. I will have to check out how long captions and also if I can do a blog on it.

http://wordpress.com

Wordpress powers roughly 1/3 of the worlds websites. You can create a free website at the above site. You are limited to the plugins they offer through the free service but Wordpress has basic image gallery functions built in, offers SEO Search Engine Optimization if you want searches to find you out, facebook integration plugins, advanced image gallery plugins, and WAY more.

The catch is it's not as simple as facebook - you need to learn a little bit about pages and posts, uploading media to the media library, etc. In other words it sort of splits the difference between hand coding your website and holding your hand 100% like Facebook does.

It does allow you to create categories and subcategories for your posts/pages - you can also create a specific page for a specific trip to organize the viewers voyage to follow your voyage.

I use Dreamhost so I have total control over my wordpress installations allowing me to install any plugins I want to use. The free service in the link above has limitations but it's a good place to start and may be all you ever need.

I have a couple of websites, on Weebley. They are free if you don't use your own domain. You can do anything you want with the layout, it's all drag and drop.
