If he used Cat5, he plugged the FireStick into the router. The router handles network traffic (wired and wifi) and the modem converts the signal back and forth to the necessary parameters to transmit.

Routers don't have HDMI ports on them as far as I know.

Down just a little farther you'll see what the OP says and where he got the dongle. The dongle connects to where the power connects on the FireStick, and then it receives the Cat6 cable and it has the same mini USB for power. It's pretty straight forward.

And it's cheaper directly from Amazon vss eBay

Are the Firestick models listed for this adapter currently available or are they discontinued models?

Any of the new Firesticks they currently sell will use this dongle. I bought 2 of them just before Christmas last year for $20 each. They are about $30 each now but I think they make a 4k model too that costs a little more.

It's too bad that wired Ethernet ports have been forsaken on so many devices nowadays.....streaming devices (Roku and Amazon), printers, laptop computers.....

Used to be that wireless was what you used if wired was not available or you NEEDED portability. Such is the way of "progress". Or, saving a few cents on manufacturing cost.

Modern 5GHz WiFi has enough speed to stream video from most services without any issues, provided your Internet Service Provider can deliver the signal fast enough.

We have our Samsung Smart TVs connected via 5G. When Spectrum has issues, the resolution drops down to 480P or even 240P. On rare occasions, it drops out altogether. But when SpeedTest is indicating download speeds above 20Mbps down, all is well. Normal speed for us is 100 to 115 Mbps down, and 10 to 12 Mbps up. The connection from the cable modem to the router is 1 Gbps. The connection from the router to devices is "up to 1300 Mbps," or 1.3 Gbps. So the full speed Internet signal is available at the TV, provided it gets into the house and there's not too much internal (home network LAN) traffic.

Now, if my wife is on the TV watching Prime, my son is watching Netflix or Hulu on his X-Box 360, and I'm watching YouTube on my iMac or iPhone, we need a full 100 Mbps feed from the Internet provider.

With most folks sheltering in place, the Internet is saturated with video traffic.

That has nothing to do with my post. I didn't mention HDMI and replied to something completely different. But thanks for showing me around the thread.

My bill for Dish Satellite TV went up at the first of the year making it over $100/mo. So I signed up with YouTube TV for less than half the price. I don't get the hundreds of channels that I'll never watch but do get channels I want plus other channels that would cost extra with Dish, i.e., Smithsonian Channel, Turner Classic Movies and a couple others. And YouTube TV includes the local channels that Dish charged an extra $12/mo.

BTW, did I mention with YouTube TV I don't have to go outside and knock the snow off the dish? And I can watch YouTube TV on any of my electronic devices: TV, desktop computer, laptop, tablet and cell phone. Anything that will receive a WiFi signal. Now as long as my modem or router don't crap out . . .

Yeah, the whole cable/TV situation is awful. I like some broadcast TV, so I don't want to drop the cable, but most of my watching is Netflix, Prime, and Acorn.

If I discontinue the TV cable, will I still get Netflix, etc?

Hi Jerry,
We completely cut-the-cord 2 weeks ago and have been learning/using fireTV sticks (2) and a firestick (1) for all of our TV. We currently are getting Netflix ($8.00 per month - pm), Prime + Acorn ($13.00 pm), and Hulu ($10 pm). We get free live and recorded channels from Pluto TV and other shows/movies from IMDb. We also get Fox News live via their app. We get to watch all of our regular programming shows on ABC-NBC-Fox the day after they appear live on TV except those on CBS. If we elect to also subscribe to CBS it will cost us another $6.00 pm. We get live news on ABC, CBS, NBC, Sky, and several others free with Pluto TV. We are very pleased with the new setup and plan to make only one change based on the type of shows we like. We plan to drop Netflix and sign up with BritBox ($6.00 pm) via Amazon Prime. For us, the lineup of movies on Hulu is very good while those on Pluto TV and IMDb are older but still good. You already know what the content is like on Prime & Acorn. Check out BritBox, you might like it. Take care & ...

I use a hacked firestick as well as VPN express.

No issue. I hardwired the TV thought. Actually the whole house is hardwired. I dislike wifi as too vulnerable.

It looks like prices are a bit lower in Idaho. Netflix costs $13/mo, and CBS is $10. I wonder how Tivo would work recording shows with your system. I'm paying $178/mo for TV, phone, and Internet. What service gets all that content into your house?

I'll see what BritBox offers that Acorn doesn't.

Jerry,
We get our internet-only (no phone) from Century Link (phone company) for $75.00 per month for a really high-speed connection (to manage our website) and our phone service is from Verizon.

One thing BritBox offers is Father Brown. Last week that program "disappeared" from Netflix when they added the new season and it's now available only on BritBox. Take care & ...

Understood. I've seen all the Father Brown, unless they started showing new ones. Netflix has some amazing junk. It seems like half their movies are about zombies.

If you liked Father Brown, try Scott and Bailey. It's either on BritBox or Prime. It's set in early 2000s Manchester/Birmingham (UK). Three women run a special investigative unit... Lots of grit and bravado, and an interesting look at working class Britain.

Vera is another detective series we liked. It's either on BritBox or Prime, as well.

Bosch is a series on Prime that we enjoyed thoroughly. It's set in Los Angeles.

It does seem like most series that run on PBS also wind up on Prime, BritBox, and other streaming services.

For a good review of the best cord cutting antennas, check out the "Antenna Man" channel on YouTube. It's a guy in PA who is obsessed with finding the best and embarrassing the rest... VERY good information.

Thanks. I'll try Scott and Baily. There was another detective series - "Murder in Suburbia" - with two women - not gritty.

Hi guys,
I've seen all of those you suggested Bill but have not seen "Murder in Suburbia" that Jerry just mentioned. Bill, I'm putting Antenna Man on my YouTube to-watch list. Thanks for the heads up. Take care & ...
