My first insect portrait. Critique please.
I returned home today from a wedding yesterday. Some of the flowers had been dropped off on my patio. The afternoon sun really made them pop so I thought I would take a few shots. I'm not usually a bug photographer but several of these little guys were admiring the flowers also.
Details:Canon 7D, 24-70L @ 70mm, 200iso, f4.0, 1/800sec
Shot in RAW with almost no adjustments. No saturation boost at all. Heavy cropping.
What do you veteran bug shooters think of my first attempt at insect portraiture?

You did pretty well, and for not using a macro lens or ext tubes you got decent detail of your skipper. I try to get a profile when possible, and or a shot of facial features is always primo. Keep shootin.
Yes...those little buggers are hard to get...not real keen on posing. Nice shot nonetheless.
Nice capture, sharp focus, what else can be said.
You did good.
Viceroy, David & john, thanks for the encouraging words.
Great shot for the equipment used.
I like to isolate my subject as much as possible from the background. I picked up your skipper in Photoshop, then darkened the original and dropped the skipper back in.

Yes CmdrDick, that definately separated the butterfly from the background. Looks almost like it was shot with a snooted flash. Thanks for the different viewpoint.
