Here in Chapel Hill on April 2nd… everything is blooming. In all the years here… I’ve never seen this particular tree bloom in this way.

I’m posting this not for any photographic value. I’m posting it simply to share with you the unusual way that this happened… in this year… in this way.

Maybe it’s not so unusual. But it is to me.

That is the first time I've seen anything like that. It is very pretty, but quite unusual. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! That is something, Barry. Redbud trees will send out short twigs with flowering buds from just about anywhere on the tree, but you have an extreme example there.

Redbud - Cercis canadensis - an understory tree native to most of the eastern United States. It is in the bean family.

That is odd. Mine has never done that, but I have seen some that do.

That’s an ancient redbud! Many redbuds in these parts show blossoms along the trunks and limbs. The redbuds here also look especially full with blooms this year. The relatively mild temps this past winter with lots of rain may account for that.

Thanks for the terrific redbud tree post. I am impressed as I have a young one in my side yard in Philly which is just now budding out, and I am looking forward to seeing it bloom more now than ever.
