I love it...but why did it happen?

I took this photo with my D300s (nikon) ISO400, 5.6,1/2500, spot metering, focal length 600.

I guess the fast speed had something to do with it but I love the way the image has popped out in colour and the rest has greyed.

How do I recreate this?
Why did it happen?

thanks

The reason that it happened is that you appature was at 5.6 giving a short depth of field. The flower is sharply infocus and the forground and background are blurred.

it wasnt the depth of field I meant, it was that the colour of the image went almost grey as though the colour was drained, this then made the colour pop out.
How do I get the image to look like a black and white photo, with a tiny bit of colour?

Is it to do with the speed or was something else happening??
thanks

Without knowing the actual color of the other things in the background, and without having the original to look at, an answer would be major conjecture at best.

If the background grass was dead anyway, then it may be as snowbird suggested. The only thing that has any real color is the flower and the green stem behind it. So regardless of DOF, you would have a colorful flower against a more drab background.

im not sure how i get you the original? this was the image I took...and I have attached it...do I have to do something different? It was part of a normal field of grass, some dried, some green. Maybe I cropped it? I sometimes do that...I will take a look. If you could let me know what I do to show you the original that would be great.

Did you do any post processing? Shooting in Raw and increasing the Black in PP could give you that effect.

I know I should...and have just read the article on here...but time is a problem. The only editing I sometimes do is to crop. My D800 has a few things on it that I have started to explore re effects and colours. My shark breaching was sharpened as my sony tablet has an editing app that sharpens.
I've also got shots where the background is black that I like...have a whole series...but not sure how I did it!
I think I will buy lightroom today...and start shooting in RAW. I do have a couple of shots in RAW now I have my D800, and some from an owl shoot as the photographer made me!!

this has a similiar look, but only because the colours were grey!

We call this effect colour popping in the UK. Whilst this is not an in camera method it is a simple proceedure in post processing. The following is how I achieve the result in PS. As I have the attention and retention span of a gnat the notes that follow are as simple as I can make them so that when I refer to them they immediately make sence (to me)
1. Bring up the photo in photoshop
2. On right hand side of screen find 'Add an adjustment' and click on the rectangle that is divided into black /white triangles. The photo will turn B/W.
3. Under the tools column on left of screen select the paint brush and paint over the area of the photo you want to 'pop'.
4. Go to the drop down menu 'Layers' on top of the screen tool bar and click on 'flatten image'.
5. Adjust contrast and brightness to taste.
6. Sharpen image using 'Unsharp Mask'
7. Save as normal.

The attached is a quick example I've just done, it took me about 3 minutes to 'pop' the routemaster bus.

Hi Shaz
I'm a Canon man however I think your in camera phenomenom happened due to you playing with your Auto and Extra High Active D-Lighting options (Maybe) Read your book on that feature

Might I suggest that either Photoshop (Expensive) or Elements 10 ( Much cheaper) would be better than Lightroom as a start point, they are both more flexible and 'creative' than Lightroom.

I would be interested to hear the results of this query.

I notice a bit of color also in the upper left corner and also on the upper edge about 1/3 in from the right corner.
