Oh, that is strange, could it be something embedded in a breathing spiracle or a prolapse of a spiracle. Someone will know. An interesting post.
The beetle itself is strange to me. I agree its soldier beetle-ish, but I'm getting a weird ground beetle/tiger beetle vibe out of this thing. Look at those jaws and eyes. I will try to look later.

when I posted it there were similar ones already posted from Texas I think, it's 3/8", I too thought tiger beetle, would have been the first one I've seen

Very well taken series and quite unusual for I have not seen a beetle of this type nor any with the protrusion. Job very well done.
