Hi UHH Members,

Since we in Washington State are now in a stay at home mandate I thought it a good time to get more proficient at my photography skills. I am looking for a textbook that has exercises for me to accomplish as if I were in a class. I have done some searching and purchased a few texts but they really didn't work for me.

Anything out there that is easily accesible?

Thanks in advance!

Keith

Assuming you know about the exposure triangle and can get the majority of your photos well exposed and well focused, I suggest the following to improve your photography skills:
Advanced Composition by Kent DuFault----- e- book put out by Photzy. Has an exercise for each chapter/subject. Probably available on Lightstalking website

Incredibly Important Composition Skills. Also an e book. Has an exercise for each chapter/subject. I'm not sure now where I bought my copy but I'd wager that you can find it with a search engine.

I use both these as source material for the classes I give at each monthly camera club meeting. Of the two Advanced Composition approaches the subject in a more scholarly fashion while Incredibly Important Composition Skills is more user friendly. Both have photo exercise assignments.

I've assigned arcs and circles as the subject for next month's photo sharing/critique. (Temporarily being done on line) Last month was clouds.

This book is highly recommended by myself and many members here on UHH.

If you are looking for a workbook type book with questions and assignments I would recommend Emma Davies "A Year With My Camera" There is a free online course but I prefer books to online so I purchased her 2 workbooks. This course starts at the very beginning as though you have never used a camera before and then it advances. The white book is the first one and the black book is the second. The cost is $25 for book 1 and $30 for book 2 on Amazon. There is a planner you can purchase also but I didn't purchase it.

Even though I don't need the basics I can still do the exercises since practice makes perfect. Good Luck!!

Another book you might want to consider is Tony and Chelsea Northrup's How to Create Stunning Digital Photography $18.99 on Amazon

Interesting that you mention this. I was straightening up the bookshelves a day or two ago and came across my copies of "The Camera," "The Negative," and "The Print," by Ansel Adams. These are classics from the film days, and they include some material that is not obviously applicable to digital photography, but taken together and in sequence, they present a very complete look at science, the craft, and the art of photography. You will need to supplement them with additional resources to handle the "complications" of color, but they are great books. If you work through them, they will help you develop a process that starts with visualization and goes all the way through to a finished print.

I was outside shooting today (back yard) doing some calibration of my D810's exposure system under a couple of specific setups, just like we learned in class to do years ago with each camera/lens/film combination.

You might also be interested in some of these free classes offered by Professional Photographers of America. I found sometimes the response time is bad. But maybe you can do this in off hours.

Thanks everyone. I just downloaded Kent deFaults ebook. Lots of good info in there. Also I am looking to purchase "A year with my camera".

These should keep me busy until we are released by the government to venture out of our homes here in Washington.

Thanks to everyone.
