I bought a photo scanner to turn my photos, negatives, and slides into digital images. Using it for the first time today. It scans 4 slides at a time in just at 3 minutes, and they look awesome.

The Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner is the solution for converting 35mm and medium-format slides, film, and prints into high-resolution digital files. With a maximum resolution of 6400 x 9600 dpi users can create enlargements up to 17 x 22". The unit has a built-in Transparency Unit which allows scanning of four 35mm mounted slides, or 12 negatives. It handles medium format film up to 6 x 22cm, plus photos and documents up to 8.5 x 11.7". This energy-efficient scanner has Epson's ReadyScan LED technology which enables the unit to operate without having to warm-up prior to use, with faster scans and lower power consumption.

The Perfection V600 has four customizable buttons to make scanning, copying, creating e-mail attachments and PDF files quick and easy. In order to create the most clean and accurate digital output, it comes with a comprehensive software package, including DIGITAL ICE technology for dust and scratch removal, ArcSoft PhotoStudio for image enhancement, and Easy Photo Fix for restoration of faded images.

Epson is the one to look at when looking for a scanner. I've got a 20-year-old Epson Perfection 3200 and it still works exceptionally well. I use Silverfast software to drive it and that matchup is ideal.

That scanner is one that has been mentioned for years whenever somebody says, "What scanner should I buy?". It might be the most popular around here.

I don't recall if I bought mine because of a recommendation here or not, but I'm glad to have it.

This is very helpful information. I have been thinking of getting the Epson v850 on the theory that a higher number and more dollars equals better. Are you suggesting that the v600 is all I really need? Scanning slides and negatives sounds like a pretty good way to pass the time during the lockdown!

I used my V600 to scan my father's and my 35mm slides from the 50's to the early 2000's when I bought my first DSLR and it always did a great job. Just the other day, I scanned my first photograph; a much faded sepia colored photo of my parent's house, taken in the late 1880's. I was astonished at how much detail the V600 was able to pull out of that old photo...details that couldn't be seen by eye. I was able to see rotten and loose shingles on the roof, rocks tied to a big well dipper (lever) as a counterbalance and the roof of another building behind a big willow tree. I could tell the rough date of the photo from configuration of the house so someone had a pretty damn good camera and lens, even then.

What would be the best scanner to copy Photo's? Is this scanner one of the best for photo copy?

Actual USABLE resolution is about 2400 dpi. Compare scans of the same sharp slide at 2400, 4800, and 9600 dpi, and you’ll see what I mean.

That’s okay for most people. It makes a nice 10x15 inch print from a full slide or negative.

Digital ICE is the best feature of that scanner, other than price. It’s amazing.

Thanks for that information. Do you think the V850 results would be significantly better?

You picked the best bang for your buck scanner on the market at this time! I still have my old Perfection 4180. It serves me well. But if I had a lot of negatives, slides or photos to scan, I would probably spring for the 600. The higher resolution (6400 vs 4800 though actual may vary but be proportionate I would think) alone would make it worth it.

Enjoy!
