Being disabled and having my mobility challenged, I opted to get a companion and service dog. I purchased Harley and was unable to get him through the red tape to become officially certified as a service animal. That being said, He has become my great companion and very supportive and intuitive of my needs. Here are a couple of shots of Harley and HIS truck.

Service dogs are highly rained, not some purchased dog. This is why your dog was refused. If everyone was really asking for a service dog certification 95% (if not more) would be refused for good reason (dogs and other critter claimed 'as').

This does not prevent the emotional link you have created or how good it is for you.

P.S. Do post in the gallery....

Beautiful boy!!! Is he full Akita? They are awesome dogs and wonderful friends. I had 4 of them years ago and would love to have another before I can no longer handle a big dog.

Please give him hugs and kisses from me!!!

Looks like an American Akita to me! (Japanese Akita have little to no black markings, especially not a black muzzle... Japanese "Akita inu" are mostly reddish with some white marking, though there are some rare ones with "brindle" markings. Also, American Akita tend to be more heavy-boned and "bear like", while the original Japanese breed are less stocky and more "fox like".)

They're wonderful dogs! But very big, strong and strong-willed. Can be difficult to control. Many American Akita grow to be as much as or more than 100 lb.

A friend (Bob) has one.... His latest of a number of Akita over the years. Close to 110 lb. now, when "Kobe" greets me he likes to stand with his front paws on my shoulder so he can look me directly in the eye! (I'm about 5'-9" tall.) After a short display of happiness at seeing me and his usual greeting, he always goes back to whatever he was doing before (guarding against strange dogs or eyeing someone's muffin). His paws are the largest I've ever seen on a dog, as big as my fist! My friend uses a collar with a "buzzer" to be able to control him on a leash (always!). Kobe is very alert and defensive. He especially takes note of and a quiet, but aggressive posture toward other dogs, even though he lives with two others... a sweet golden retriever who flunked out of service dog training (about 70% do), and a spunky little Havanese. Kobe is fine and even gentle with "his own" dogs... but has to be distracted from confronting unfamiliar ones!

Be careful of him jumping in and out of a vehicle. Due to their weight, Akita can injure themselves by landing too hard on one or two legs. Kobe got some sort of nerve damage in one of his front legs, took a year or more to rehab to an extent, but still limps with it. Not sure if this was due to jumping in and out of Bob's truck... because it occurred shortly after the dog was given his regular vaccinations, and Akita are also known to be sensitive to any drugs, anesthesia & tranquilizers, insecticides.

Very loyal and highly protective, Akita were originally bred to defend farms from strangers and other animals. A "primitive" breed (not far removed from wolves), they are though to be around 1000 years old and were used for dog fighting in the 17th Century. Oh, and they can shed the approx. equivalent of a small lap dog just about daily!

Factoid: The first two Akita in the U.S. were gifts to Helen Keller. Following a trip to Japan she was given one to take home with her, but unfortunately it died not long after. The Japanese government sent her another in 1938. It was after WWII that many returning GIs brought more home from occupied Japan. Starting around that time, breeding of American Akita tended to favor the larger, more bear-like dogs with black muzzles, which led to the distinctions between them today.

We did extensive research on him and the breed (American Akita) before we acquired him. We have heard of Akita's being aggressive but he is very good natured and extremely well socialized. He is very close to my wife and I but loves the neighbors on his regular walks. He weighs about 110 lbs but does not jump and seems to be very aware of my limitations. Walking with him has helped me regain the ability to walk enough to photograph again. He is usually my companion on my picture taking trips. Thank you so much for your comments.

Thank you. I was trying to capture his attitude towards his truck. He definitely thinks it belongs to him.

He looks like a big "Ole Boy". I had to laugh about the "His Truck" comment.
