Dear Hogs - especially Hogs who own the LX-100.
For any of you wonderful folks who own the Panasonic LUMIX LX-100, I have a question for you.
In the manual, it says that for the SDHC type card, the capacity is 4GB to 32GB whereas for a SDXC card the capacity is from 48GB to 64GB. Is there really an upper limit on these cards, or could I, for example, use a 128GB SDXC card?
I'm wondering if these limits were just the best available when the manual was printed or whether there is some digital limitation with this camera that precludes using cards later that what is listed?
Can anyone with the LX-100 confirm or deny whether there is really these limits on SD card size?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Basil,
Im interested in any replies to this, just from an academic point of view.
But as an aside, personally I wouldnt trust any card in a 1 card camera to hold that many photos without a backup in another 'slot'.
I use 32GB cards and download them to my computer without ever filling them.
But I alternate the cards usually when I change the battery.
I cannot answer your query fully as I only use 32 gb cards. The newer LX 100 ii has a higher stated capacity. Since this camera's raw files are relatively small, I have never filled my memory cards, though I always carry a second card, just in case. The real issue others will point out is that cards are chesp, but images can be priceless. I always download my cards daily. If the Lumix had larger files like some Sony and Canon cameras you might consider a higher capacity card. Years ago I had an issue with two cards, not fitting in my Sonya DSLRs cameras slot. It seems that the slot had a piece of plastic debris that kept the Sony from accepting a card. I ruined two cards until I found the issue. I was able to empty the cards but will not rely on one high capacity card. I use 64gb cards in my 42 mpx cameras. All capacities are relative. If you are shooting video on the lumix you might wish to borrow a higher capacity card and see the results. Or has other Hogs might grunt and say, email Panasonic.
I do not own this camera, but generally the issue is the addressing scheme.
Early SDSC cards had a 2GB max capacity, to the cameras has an addressing scheme that would support this.
Then came SDHC cards with a 2GB to 32GB capacity, so cameras (including yours) revised the addressing scheme to support this.
As card capacities increased, the addressing scheme keeps getting upgraded. I believe the latest are into the TERRABYTES.
As an aside, regardless of camera, I would limit my cards to 32Gb. I would also have multiple cards, and switch often, in case of card failure or loss of camera. Something about putting all your eggs in one basket.
