Just started working With CS5 on my Win 7 system. I tried using the content aware fill function and got an out of RAM condition. Can this be resolved in preferences, or do I need more RAM?

How much do you have? If you have 6-8 GB or more, then I seriously doubt it. If you have 4 or less - probably.

Certain aspects within Photoshop will use significant memory and Content Aware is one of them (multiple layers is another). You should increase your RAM to at least 8GB. For now, try closing all other programs and see if that works.

It seems like 6 is OK (that is what I have and never have a RAM issue) but more - even a LOT more is better. I am on a Mac and as soon as they finally come out with the new MacPro I will be upgrading to at least 8, probably more.

Hi George
i am a CS5 noob as well.
Maybe you could "flatten layers" before doing the content aware fill?

checking with my computer guy now to see what I can do with my existing desktop. If I can get 4gb more that would give me 8 and should solve a lot of problems.

Lighthouse.. The image I was trying to work with had only one layer. I was about to do some with the spot healing brush, but even that crawled. I'll let you know what he recommends.

I discovered that my ready boost drive was not being used. I reattached it and made sure it was dedicated to ready boost. when I did that and tried the content aware fill again on the same image it worked, but it crawled. So I just may get more memory.

Another question: I notice in some of the videos where people are using MACs they have a 3D icon on the menu bar. I don't see it on my PC. Is that a MAC feature only?

I have PS CS5 and PS CS6 (running on Windows 7) installed on two computers. One of them (laptop) has only 4 GB RAM. No problems with the Content Aware Fill. You may try to increase the amount of RAM used by PS. Go to Edit>General>Performance>Let Photoshop Use . . .

Here is some information on how to optimize Photoshop's performance.

No, it is not a Mac feature. It looks like in the videos they are using the Extended version of Photoshop.

That's good news indeed!

I just checked my two computers and here is what I have.

Laptop (4 GB RAM) -- Photoshop uses 2041 MB (60%).

Desktop (8 GB RAM) -- Photoshop uses 4327 MB (60%).

I didn't assign this RAM usage to Photoshop. It seems to be the default usage.

With the cost of memory these days & the way software guzzles it up, fill eeerrr up...
