This is my preserved black fly that I staged for a two focus stacking sessions. One to showcase its compound eyes and the other to show more of the fly for context.

When you said black fly that brought less than fond memories of a couple of fishing trips to Canada.
We were there before warm weather, when they die.
Have to have to experience them to fully appreciate them.
Relief is on the way.
Nature is awakening.

Thanks, Mark. Not a "pretty" subject for sure and it's been in alcohol for months now.

Thanks, Tinusbum. I find your work to be inspiring and I'm vibrating with anticipation to be able to get back into the weeded fields. A guy can only drink so much coffee while waiting for spring to pop.

Thanks, Bill. I know that you are working on several setups. These were taken with a $40 50mm enlarger lens set at f/5.6 that I reversed mounted onto a bellows. Nothing other than the lens and the bellows. If you try reversed lenses, keep in mind that the "effective f/stop" is the inverse of what it would show on the lens setting.

Thanks, Jeff. I'll try to find a prettier one when they come back this spring which will hopefully be soon.

Thanks, Greg. I believe that flies make interesting subjects and few would have an issue with me dispatching them. Some are quite ugly such as this one and others are no so much so like this one of my earlier sessions.

I find it to be quite fulfilling and I always appear to see things in ways that I have not seen them before. It's a wonderful hobby that can be done indoors year round and one that anyone that may have mobility issues can do as well. More interesting is that the investment is quite small compared to macro lenses most commonly used.
