Does anyone have a Sony a 9 and use Canon lenses, like the 100-400mm ii for birding and sports. Would like to know how the auto focus works and quality of the pictures. Thank you in advance for any info you can share. I am thinking about the Sony a9.

As compared to what alternative? 7d mkii or 5d mkiv? I would love to see the responses.

I have a variety of Canon glass and recently have moved to Sony bodies and a Metabones iv adapter. My A7Riii does great with all the Canon glass except for my old 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 lens - original not the Mark 2. This lens is slower to focus than on the Canon bodies and at times will not auto-focus at all. I recently got the Sony A9ii and it does much better with all of the Canon glass.

Continued:

I just did a comparison of the Canon vs the Sony 100-400 and was totally shocked by the much better image quality of the Sony over the Canon. The Sony 100-400 has the best IQ of any zoom lens I have used in this focal length range and I highly recommend giving it a try. Combined with the Sony 1.4x converter it could be a perfect hand-held birding combination.

I have the Sony A9 with the Sony 100-400. I was just in Florida doing some birding. I was very pleasantly surprised at how sharp the images were with that combo, handheld!

The quality would not be affected as there is no element changing the optics which for the 100-400mm range there is no lens made that even comes close to its quality.
You will not have the same speed of focus as with a real Canon camera from research.

I didn't even try it when I made the switch from Canon to Sony. I simply made the assumption that the combination of the A9 and with the Sony 100/400 was going to perform better with the native glass compared to the Canon option. I bought the A9 because of its AF speed and accuracy. Why would I put anything on this body that potentially could interfere with the optimal capabilities of the camera? I couldn't think of a single reason.

I have an A7Riii and use the Sigma mc11 adapter- was pleasantly surprised by the speed and accuracy of the 100-400 L ii on it, probably the best combo of all my Canon lenses.

I have the A9 with 2 adapted Canon mount lenses and they work great with the Sigma MC-11. I tested the Canon 100-400 ver. II, it was very good on the A9 & A7R IV but I ended up getting the Sony 100-400 GM. It has become my favorite walk around lens.

I don't have the a9 but use Canon lenses with Sigma's MC-11 adapter on both an A7S and A7 III with good results. I also have MetaBones III & IV adapters. Sigma's MC-11 is much better and less expensive.

However, I do much prefer Sony's 200-600mm.
