The beetle resembles the Common Red Soldier Beetle, Hogweed Bonking Beetle (who makes these up?), or, Rhagonycha fulva, but I do not think it is that.
The antenna, exposed last abdominal segment and tarsal claw insertion point to another Cantharidae species, tho.
Being European, my literature will not get much closer to the correct species.

Ground-beetle-ish, but there are similar families of tiny beetles: Anthicidae, and Pedilidae.
Both are lovely pictures, either way!

Thanks Bill, I have followed up your suggestions and those of Mark and my thoughts are that it is one of the many Soldier Beetles, Cantharidae species. I have found similar images on the Web and the nearest I can get is Cantharis nigricans but leg colour doesn't really fit unless age is a factor in leg colour.

Thanks Mark, I am thinking Soldier beetle at the moment, Cantharidae sp. but cannot be confident on species.
