Thinking of transferring Nikon D850 images, by the cable that came with the camera, to my computer. I notice online that a lot of devices work on 3.0. I don't notice any specified for 3.1. And I don't know if a device specified for 3.0 will work on 3.1. (Maybe the cable is 2.0? I do have a 2.0 port.) Also, to upload images by cable from the camera, do I simply plug the camera end through the specified camera port (I see that), the other end to the computer's USB port, and then turn on the camera...and the computer should respond with a message to click on for the upload? I began searching for an SD card reader. I found a nice-looking UGreen 3.0 for only $7.95 Amazon Prime, but I don't know if 3.0 will work...thanks.
3.0 is the same as 3.1 gen1 , 3.1 gen2 is double the max speed of 3.0 /3.1 gen1. The type A ports are all backwards compatible.
usb-c is a connector which can do more than the type A connector (including power delivery upto 100 Watts) It doesn't have to do everything that it supports. For example I have a usb-c SSD drive it comes with a cable with 2 usb-c ports and a converter which goes from usb-c to USB A in theory without that converter the max data speed is 10GPS but in practice the SSD can't go faster than 5GPS anyway.
For your purposes 3.0/3.1 gen1 /gen2 usb-c doesn't matter.

Oh! I was not aware that technology had progressed to that state of the art.
Thanks for the information.
May I suggest that GbPS would be more descriptive?

The issue is not going to be on the camera side but on the computer side. Regardless, you will not notice the difference.
I really just aged myself..when I started reading the post..I honestly though you were talking about windows 3.1..

USB 3.1 is backward compatible however, I do not recommend transferring photos directly from your camera to your computer. It is much safer to remove the flash memory cards (SD) from the camera and transfer it using your computer's SD port or a USB card reader. If you reformat the memory cards after a transfer, replace them in the camera and reformat them in the camera. Do not format the memory cards in your computer because the camera puts data on the card that it needs and that information will not be available to the camera if you format the cards from your computer.
If you haven’t been doing this with your images, how in the world do you get the most out of what that very expensive camera can capture?

USB 2, 3, 3.1 are all fully compatible. If devices at both ends of the cable are US 3/3.1, transfers will be faster.
USB cables commonly have a blue plastic bar on the "A" end (what plugs into the computer).
A USB "B" connector is different for USB 2 and USB 3. The camera connector is different for USB 2 and USB 3.
Does your D850 manual TELL you what kind of connector it has?
