I have tried in the past to download to a new 128 GB iPad using the lightening connector and a card reader. I have a Sony 7III, but I have never been able to get it to download pictures wirelessly. Depending on what happens with the Covid 19, we have a 26 day European cruise this spring and I would like to ensure that my pictures are preserved. I do shoot in raw. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you trying to download RAW files? If just JPEG go into photo settings and make sure download / upload is set to compatible format. Your IPad stores pictures in HEIC. If RAW files go to App Store and download PS Express (it is free) and that should recognize RAW files. Light Room & Photoshop are also available from the AppStore, but require in app purchases.

I agree with CHG Canon. Also, I do not download raw files to my iPad - just JPEG’s for quick posting to social media. Raw files soak up memory very fast on a iPad. My iPad is only 64GB. At 128GB on yours it probably would not be long before raw files would fill the memory.

With SanDisk 32GB Extreme cards (90 MB/s) running $10 a card, just buy 5 to 10ish and don't worry about it. At 24MP, you can put between 700 and 900 RAW files onto each card. If you think you'll fill more than 10 cards in 26-days, buy more now. But, given the likelihood we'll look back someday and call today 'COVID Monday', maybe it's too early to buy any new equipment for cruises.

I have an IPad and use it to show portfolio pictures to prospective clients. I’m interested in your question as well. The only way I know how to get images on it is to sync photos using the iTunes app, but this requires pictures to be previously uploaded to a PC. I’m hoping an Apple wizard will help us both here.

I use the ss card reader from Apple without any problems. I have an non Apple reader that for some reason doesn’t always work with my ipads. Wirelessly, I also have Sony’s (a6000 & a7RIII) and I yet to been able to transfer without card reader. The camera store I use is 200mi north, and the rep there has said when I come there next time they will show me how to do the wireless transfer. A few Months ago I switched to only RAW, and also have no problems with transferring, and or processing. Once loaded on the the pad, I am able to use several different editing versions. The PS LR will open the files and allow to make adjustments. But it’s a pain to use and save. I prefer Affinity, and CaptureOne for Sony. PS for iPad is a joke.

I believe you have to use the lightning to card reader to download raw files. They are too big to down load wireless. The little card reader is small why not just take it if you want to down load RAW. Snap seed also works good on RAW files, and it’s free!

I agree with CHG_CANON on this technique of saving files for later review. Having recently returned from an Antarctic trip of three weeks, I still have all 14 of my 32 gig SanDisk cards with both RAW and JPEG files on them. The JPEGs are for quick use on the iPad and they download from my card reader easily. As long as the files are jpeg, they will be recognized by the iPad as something it can import. The cards hold approximately 400 files of each type before being filled. I copy everything to my backup external drives, (2 separate WD 8 TB drives) once I’m back home, but instead of reformatting or deleting the images I just buy new cards as I need them. But if you’d rather not keep your files stored on them, or if the continuing expense is not in your budget, with an initial purchase of cards to use for shooting on vacation you would never have to worry about this subject again.

I have no trouble downloading raw files to my ipad pro using the Apple card reader. I can view/edit with Apple Photos or Lightroom. I take plenty of SD cards and don't erase them till I get home. With lightroom my photos and edits will easily add themselves to my desktop once I get home, so the SD cards are my backup.

I have an inexpensive SD card reader from Amazon that works well with my iPadPro.I have wire SD cards and wireless capability in my Pentax K3, but find transfer too slow plus draining on the camera battery, so I prefer plugging in the card reader to the iPad. It easily transfers RAW and JPGs. Most of my cards are 32 MB.

I use Hyperdrive adapter HyperDrive USBC Hub Adapter 6-in-1 Dongle with USB C PD Charging, 4K HDMI, USB 3.0, 3.5mm Headphone Jack, SD, Micro SD. It works very well and the other ports are useful and it can stay on the iPad.

An iPad will not download RAW files on its own. You need an app for that. Some have mentioned Photoshop Express. There are likely others. Google it.

Since the introduction of IOS/ IPados 13
Things have got easier with the iPad, if yours has usb-c much easier as its usually plug and play but the lightning port iPads are a little harder since the port usually doesn't provide much power for external devices.

you need
https://www.apple.com/ie/shop/product/MK0W2ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter
A Powered usb hub
A Drive
A card reader
maybe a USB battery bank.
Possibly a sata to usb3 adapter

essentially plug the apple lightning to usb3 adapter into the ipad plug the usb3 hub into that supply power to that usually this needs a micro usb lead which can be plugged into the ipad power brick or maybe a usb battery pack. plug the card reader, and drive into the usb hub

use the files app to transfer from the card to the drive.

If you have an iPad with usb-C then you can just plugin a usbC hub and it should provide enough power.

Cheapest solid state drive is probably a 1TB 2.5" internal, which can be adapted with a sata to usb3 adapter cable. Ok you can buy an external SSD which is already usb3 but usually it's a lot smaller capacity or costs more.

There are a lot of variations on this theme e.g i have a powered usb dock which takes 2 sata drives and has a built in card reader and a couple more usb3 ports it does require 12 volts usually from a wall wart.

However this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01I4JJ6IK adapts a Sony NP-F970 F750 F550 Battery to 12 volts I use it as an external battery for a BMPCC camera but it has a lead which provides 12 volts to larger drives, Docks or my sata to usb3 adapter. For charging the Sony batteries i have a dual charger which takes in 5 volts via a micro usb cable.

Anyway lots of options available

I have the iPadPro2 running the 13.3.1 OS update. I’ve been able to import RAW files directly into the iPad’s regular photo pad without using any other app.

Why complicate things? Simply purchase the number of memory cards you need for the trip. This will eliminate the need to download anything while traveling.

I’d bring it back to the Apple Store and let them try. It could be many reasons, but make sure you have WIFI.
