I just received my camera back from major repair at Precision Camera, and noted on the invoice that FW Ver 2.0 was included. Early morning I had the camera set for sky shots of rising sun and clouds which resulted in a nice black fore and mid-ground. In PP with PE 2019 I shoved the brightness up, a healthy dose of clarity and topped it off with aggressive sharpening. Result? A very acceptable total image with NO NOISE. No noise reduction!! BTW, this shot was taken through the side window of the vehicle at 50mph.

Thank you, Don. I see you posted before I did an edit. The image here looks very dark compared to on my monitor, so I adjusted the brightness to better exposure. If it looks OK to you as-is, then OK.
Very nice...gonna have to check my RX10 MIV firmware!!

Are you saying that the new firmware now gives lower noise in the image? Raw or jpg?

All I know is, after using high amount of clarity and/or strong sharpening which were guaranteed to produce noise I looked for it, and could not find ANY. Also brightening badly underexposed areas, no noise. Raw, jpg, tif, all the same. Maybe I just hit it lucky, maybe I'm dreaming. Want another example...?
Edit: This is the one I took more time on, and printed
BTW, this is another shot through the glass at 50 mph.

I just did mine but haven't tried to see if it made a difference. Thanks for the tip.
Reminder to Mac users: Close all other apps. Do what you like to absolutely prevent the computer from going to sleep while the upgrade is running. Make sure your battery is strong. Follow the instructions on the camera and the computer exactly as they appear after you start the update app which, of course, must be downloaded from SONY.
One easy way to prevent computer from sleeping: Open Terminal. Type "caffeinated" and hit Enter. It will prevent sleeping until you stop the process. One way to stop it is to use Control+C. After you stop caffeinated you can close Terminal.
The update takes a few minutes and it seems much longer than, probably, it is while the green progress bar creeps along, Be patient.

you're welcome. If it works for you as it did for me, the noise-reduction folks will have to find another line of work.

What required a 'major repair' on the IV? Just curious.

I knew someone would ask that...
Without going into great detail, the camera took a hit that required a new lens element plus some other internal damage. Around $500 worth. I do not handle the camera without it being attached to a short tether on my upper body anymore.

A neck or shoulder strap would not have saved this.(did not save). Sitting in office chair with elbow on arm rest shooting birds through patio doors. Brief doze, camera fell and struck sharp edge of two-drawer file cabinet. Now I wear a wrap-around wrist strap with tether just long enough to grasp the camera normally. Quick-release to disengage camera with anchor still in place, like a safety bracelet.
