These are Delphinium hybrid blossoms. There are something like 300 species worldwide, and they have been cultivated and grown in gardens for 500 years. The two species most common in gardens are native to Europe and Asia. They are from Ranunculaceae - the Buttercup family.

The Raynox 250 magnifier let me get a little more magnification than 1:1.

Comments and criticism always welcome.

Mike,
Beyond Outstanding. The first image is my favorite. What was your lighting?Where did you capture this image?

Thanks, Stan.

I worked with cut flowers indoors. Each blossom is about an inch and a half (38 mm) in diameter. I use one A type LED bulb in an 8" reflector directly set a couple of inches above the flower; a 5"X8" LED panel on the left; and 8"X11" white polystyrene sheets positioned in front and below the flower to bounce some fill light back onto the subject.

Beautiful! The little petals inside the flower, are those stamens that are shaped like petals?
I really like Raynox lenses for giving that extra boost in mag that you sometimes need.

Very nice images, I think the reproductive parts of flowers make beautiful macro shots.

Thanks, Mark. Aren't they weird? I assume that like a lot of garden plants it is polyploid - having more than two paired sets of chromosomes - which leads to larger and multiple parts, more aggressive plants with larger and fancier blossoms. I think the outer petals are actually sepals. The stamens and pistils seemed to be jumbled together randomly. It looks to me like there are there sets of petal-like structures - the outer whirl; the ones attached to the spur; the little whites ones around the stamens. I am far from being an expert, but I am sure fascinated by this.
