Corona Virus Could Cancel The 2020 Olympics In Japan

The Associated Press (AP) had an article yesterday, that the International Olympics Committee (IOC) is debating whether or not to cancel the 2020 Olympics in Japan. Because of the Corona Virus. The only time I know of an Olympics cancellation, was during WW2. The IOC says that the next three months, will be critical in making the decision. Three new full frame cameras have been mentioned, that were to be highlighted there, on this forum. Canon 1DX Mark 3, Sony a9ii, and the Nikon D6. They may not be used. At all.

Seems like a no-brainer to cancel the games. What an ideal venue to spread the virus...... thousands of people from all over the world.

Seem to remember Tom Clancy wrote a book about a plot to spread a virus at an Olympic game.

I read that the government of Japan does not want to cancel, or postpone the Olympics. The three month observation period will end by the end of May 2020. If the virus has been contained by then, the Olympics will most likely begin as scheduled. The attendees of the Olympics are worldwide. And tickets are sold to see the events. The most exciting events are the most expensive to purchase.

And your comment omits another mitigating thought, at least as it pertains to potential disease spread. The Olympic villages always supply about 5-10 condoms per Olympic participant.

Better yet, in 1980 (about) Dean Koontz wrote "The Eyes of Darkness" in which he chronicles the creation of the "Wuhan-40 virus" and later in the tale predicts that it would be unleashed in early 2020. If that ain't spooky I don't know what is.

It should be probably be cancelled or delayed. The virus is so far, very contagious, typical antivirals don't work, and the governments worldwide are generally unprepared for it. So far the things that are working are AIDs and Ebola drugs which even in developed nations are not in any great supply. I've read a couple of books on the Spanish Flu of 1918 (which actually came out of the US)
was the first modern pandemic and killed millions; worldwide transmission by air makes the spread considerably easier today. Generally vaccines are the best way of stopping a virus, but that takes time to develop and longer to put into production. The best solution short term is to isolate it, but it appears that the virus is now on every continent except Antarctica. Pretty scary.

Japan just closed all of their schools until April 2020. Because of the virus outbreak.

It's no wonder they don't want to cancel it. We're talking billions of dollars in travel, tickets, sponsorship, TV rights, etc.
