Every time I think that if I just buy this one more thing my photo life will be complete, GAS rears its head. We're going on vacation to Chincoteague Island in May and will be on the Assateague Channel with a great view. I'm hoping for some bird shots while there, and wild pony shots. The longest lens I have is a 55-250mm right now.
My camera is an EOS t2i, and at my level it suits me just fine. I'm not interested in competing with the excellent wildlife photographers on here, just in making the best of what I have.
Just FYI I've already researched the lens, and though not rated as sharp as prime lenses the Tamron looks to be one I can shoot handheld, my preference and has good i.s. I'll pick up a lenscoat for it and a case, too.

Been there, done that, not happy, sold it.
Bought Canon 100-400 & 1.4 extender. Happy now.

I would talk no one into buying a third party glass that will eventually result in buyers remorse.

The EF 400L is a nice light weight lens but it is a unitasker. The EF 100-400L is heavier but also far more versatile and you should be able to pick up a nice one for under $800. You may even find nice used EF 100-400L II for around $900 and it's lighter and smaller than the original. The first thing I did when I got my EF 100-400L II was sell my EF 400L. I no longer needed it.

Considering he is concerned with BIF, he would be shooting at 400mm regardless and the lens is "Great" glass.
He has a 55-250mm, the 100-400 would be redundant for more than half its range. I don't see any used EF 100-400L II for under $1100.00.
Go prime "L" Glass for your nature photography.

It would be a great lens if it had IS but it doesn't. It is a very old design. It was my first L series telephoto lens and the first lens I sold when I bought the EF 100-400L II, which I use with an EF 1.4X III teleconverter with excellent results.

I snagged a G1 for about $450 a few years back. It had been $550, but the seller refunded me $100 as I thought it was the G2 version.

Are you a shill for Nikon? Yes, you're entitled to your opinion and if you choose to only buy Nikon lenses that's great, but from what I've seen, the bulk of people on here with third party glass are pretty happy with it and have no buyers remorse.

I rented one last year for my Nikon D200 for a trip to the Whooping crane reserve in south Texas. It worked great. It was not expensive to rent too. I did mostly hand held as best I could while on a boat in the wind. I also tried to stabilize on anything I could lean on. My shots came very good. Either way only you can make the decision to buy it based on the use and time you wish to utilize it.

If you go new, Tamron also has a 6yr warranty

Why doesn't anyone ever talk about the Tamron 100-400? I am so new to photography. Last year I bought one and have a difficult time getting the sharp pictures I want. My dream is bird photography. We go to Costa Rica every year and I love the birds. Any suggestions on how I can get my pictures to be better? Thanks for your help. Don't be too hard on me because I am very much a newbie!

Have you tried tuning the lens with their Tap In console?

Rather than hijacking someone else's thread, you should begin your own thread, explaining your problem and posting and storing original JPEG images and asking for help.

If it's any help I have a nikon d7200, with a couple of small zoom lenses, last year I purchased a second hand sigma 50/500mm lens, also known as bigma, its heavy, but can be used hand held, I don't want to be carting about a tripod, I use it mostly for wildlife, and birls, the tamron lens is a good lens, personally I preferred the sigma because of light, and speed of focus, if you can afford it they do a newer one sigma 50 600mm, awsome lens with updates available over the Internet, great lens slightly lighter than my one.
Preference is down to the user, but my lens was £400, and was in nearly new condition. Don't hesitate, get a big zoom..
