These birds, like so many, are tireless workers. Watching them build a nest is really interesting.
Best viewed in download. Thanks!

Nice sharp capture of Wood Stork in flight. Building a nest requires many flight hours.

I love your picture. I have been able to see Wood Storks building nests at the Rookery in St. Augustine. Generally, my photos to not have the head as "light" as yours is. Were you using your "manual mode" when shooting this? I have always used shutter priority, but I'm now getting used to the manual mode. I plan on going to FL once again, and I hope to have success in getting photos of what I call: "My FL Birds".

Thank you and this was taken at the Alligator Farm. I think the head is lighter because the sun was directly hitting it.
Almost 100% of the time I not shoot in manual. More than likely this would have been 2,000 or 3,000 of a second, f5.6 and auto ISO with spot exposure. I usually use my Nikon D500.
I love Wisconsin - had a place in Door County and office in northern Illinois and Lake Geneva.

Thank you kpmac. Hard workers with a prehistoric face.

Thank you for your quick response. I do use spot exposure, although I haven't used auto ISO for shooting birds. I have used auto ISO for indoor photography of my granddaughter's gymnastic meets and basketball games. I will add the auto ISO to my bird photography, and see if that helps. BTW - do you know of places near St. Augustine to get closeups of wading birds? I have opted to go to the gulf side of FL, as I have seen them walk right along the gulf waters. I dearly love being at the "rookery" at the Alligator Farm, though. Thanks.

Thank you for your quick response. I do use spot ... (show quote)

That is a good question. From what I have seen here, a suggestion would be the Intracoastal Waterway around mid tide.... but would probably need boat access and shoot from the water. There have to be some open areas where you can shoot from shore but not aware of any. Try this north of St. Augustine: http://www.abfla.com/parks/GuanaRiver/guanariver.html

Thanks. I did go to this place in 2017. I saw very few when I was there - a Snowy Egret and a Wood Stork. Thanks for your suggestion. I hope to do better on the gulf side, where birds are more apt to wade - the ocean is too powerful for that.

The Jacksonville Zoo also has a big Wood Stork rookery every year in the Africa area. I've been photographing them for years. Very interesting birds. I also hope to get to the St.Augustine Alligator Farm again this year for all the other birds. It is the best place in our area of Florida.

The birds are usually nesting there from around March until June or so. There were still alot of birds and nests last June when I went there to take my images. But only there for nesting season.
