Is there any way to couple my D7100 to an iPad so that I can view (and, hopefully save) photos as I take them. Or after taking. Or both. Wired or wireless is okay. Thanks.

You can buy a SD card reader from Apple for about 30 bucks that allows you to upload photos to your iPad.
I would steer clear of 3 party devices I tried one without success.

Try the Nikon wireless mobile utility on the Apple App Store. I use the Canon app and it works great, don’t know if Nikons app does as well but you may find it’s worth a try.

Well I play Santa Claus at the local mall. I am accompanied by my fellow photographer . what I think your looking for is software based he uses a smaller series Canon EOS camera connected to an apple laptop hooked to 2 event printers ,as a 3rd assistant shoots the images are sent to the laptop with another monitor hooked up so customers can pick photos and the photographers screen shows the same images . A package is created and the event photo package is created and printed by both printers as one is at 5 x 7 printer and the other 8 x 10 .every thing is software driven . Look up event photography you should find it there ...works for us . Canon is ahead of the curve with this as Nikon is a harder connection to make or we have not found the right software ...

The D7100 does not have build-in wifi capability. You need the Nikon WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter.

Here's a free program that will control the camera from a cell phone or tablet. qDslrDashboard V3.5.9

Another free program to control a tethered nikon is Digicamcontrol

Hope this helps

Another way to do it with a D7100 is shooting tethered to lightroom Classic using lightroom CC to send imaged to the iPad.
I know this is not exactly what you are asking but this is what I do when shooting in studio. Not practical out of studio. As mentioned above to connect directly to an iPad you need the Nikon wireless adapter.

Nikon has an app SnapBridge that connects the camera to a smartphone or tablet via WiFi or Bluetooth. If your camera has WiFi you can tether to the tablet if bluetooth only it will automaticly download a jpeg version.

I have one of these and it worked fine until iOS 13. Everyone was reporting that it no longer worked. But after reading your note (thank you,) I realized that there have been several dot updates to 13 so I tried it again this morning and, mirabile dictu, it works. Thank you for jogging my memory.

I have used the QdslrDashboard and a WU-1a to control, view and transfer images from a D7100 - worked well

I bought an apple USB adapter for cameras on Amazon for about $30.00. It connects to the USB cord on my camera and to IPAD. It finds photos and uploads them to IPAD. I used it with my D7100. It is easier, in my opinion, than the wireless adapter.

Used an SD card reader (spent a few extra $ and bought directly from Apple) and it worked awesome! Was my back-up for thousands of pictures taken in Cuba and South Africa.
