I have a Canon 7d ii and a Tamron 100-400 mm lens. Does anyone have any experience using the Canon or the Tamron extenders? I am interested in feedback about image quality and maintaining autofocus. Thank you.
Bill

To begin, canon won’t fit on tamron, this being said my 1,4 is almost permanently affix to my 100-400 I loose a bit of definition at 400 but it’s offset by the range I gain

I've tested 3 x1.4 extenders at my local store and the Canon EF x1.4 III IQ was visibly better than Kenko and Tamron, both in contrast and colour. I checked the resulting images at 100% on my laptop and again they looked noticeably sharper. With my particular setup, the Kenko was poor, the Tamron was OK. In fact I got better results just cropping the 100-400 image to the same size than with the Kenko. It could of course have been a duff one.

I invariably use with a Canon 100-400 but Just tested it with a Sigma 150mm Macro DG + Canon x1.4 + EF->RF adapter on an EOS R and it works just fine. No visible problems with IQ at aperture, AF is no different than without, and at 100% image looks just fine.

So it looks as if providing the lens works, some Extenders are interchangeable. Suggest you check your combination at your local photo store to avoid disappointment in IQ after the event.

When I had a 7DII I often used it with my EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L II and EF 1.4xIII extender. Image quality was very good but, if I remember correctly, I lost all focus points except the single center point and the 4 assist points that surround it. Auto-focus was also a bit slower. What is the max aperture of the Tamron? If it is the same as the Canon then you will also lose focus points.

Thank you. I read that I would lose focus points with the Canon 100-400. Since the maximum aperature is the same for the Tamron, I expect to have to rely on the center focus point.

Yes, you get only the center point, possibly the 'expanded' center of 5-points at f/8 with the EOS 7DII. As noted in the comments above, the EF 1.4x cannot be physically connected to the Tamron lens, so it is not an option.

Canon extenders are designed for a select group of Canon L lenses. They are generally not suitable with lenses that are not explicitly on the compatibility list.

I am surprised that you are able to use a Canon Extender with a Sigma lens.

Looking online, the product listings that include a view of the rear of the Sigma lens seem to show an opening internal to the lens similar to compatible Canon L lenses where the Canon extender can 'extend' into the lens body. Similar views of the Tamron would seem to show also enough space. Still, generally accepted 'best practices' are to use the same manufacturer's extender with their lenses.
