AI vs Machine learning

With all the marketing spin about AI I thought it might be interesting to look at the inaccuracy.

AI vs Machine learning - a good (technical) discussion of the differences which absolutely point out none of what anyone is labeling as AI is really AI. This isn't looking at photographic pp software specifically but it is totally relative.

A Summary is this - what is being done right now is computers are looking at examples, applying code against that to find the 'best' version (based on the what the code determines is best), then to create code to look at your data (image) to apply those 'best' code against it. So it is great for Tesla to determine if what is in front of them is a person or a piece of trash.

AI is like asking the Telsa to determine what you want to do today. A totally different process and it DOESNT exist yet.

There is software that can make a decision based on data points that it is given but that is more ML. The term that is more commonly given in context is Big Data which can take billions of data elements from different types of data and match them and process them to answer given answers. ML is not needed but can speed up the amount of time it takes to derive answers. In my last job for a company with their own open source system with some in house proprietary modules, it wasn't uncommon to have multiple files that contained billions of rows each being matched to come to up with data that has been manipulated to reach a conclusion. What is amazing to me after 30+ years in the programming world ( I started programming on cards) using mainframes which I have seen take 2 days to process 500k records, with these new servers with 400+ CPU's we could process multi- billion row files in anywhere from 30 minutes to see several hours, but not days and weeks that it would have taken 30 years ago

yep, exactly why your financial passwords should be at least 14 characters these days. Only a few years ago 8 would suffice. This is very dependent on the format of the password.

For instance - a 14 character password of only lowercase alpha takes a supercomputer 5 minutes to break
Add uppercase and it is 61 days
Add digits, special characters and others it will take 667 years

For 10 characters in length with all those checked: 4 minutes!
12 - 28 days

want to try your own? - http://passwordstrengthcalculator.org/index.php

if you aren't using a password manager - I suggest and recommend 1Password - you will be hacked

There is AI in the photographic world although it is still limited at this time. You do not have to point an Olympus E-M1X at a car, motorcycle or car helmet, or plane for the camera to find it. It will find those on it own with no help from the photographer. Once it finds those, it will follow them wherever they go in the viewfinder. And the camera will outline them, even if there are four or five of them, even if they change shape due to a different angle, and let you know which one the camera has chosen to focus on. The photographer can change which one to focus on, either closer or further away from the group, and it will continue to focus on that one while still identifying the others.

Olympus used algorithms that they thought would best represent these objects and then allowed the computer to "see" these objects. Then the computer made algorithms that it "thought" described them better. 10s of thousands of photos of each object where presented to the computer to identify until the computer could "learn" to identify them by itself with no help. The camera knows what these objects are from any angle and will seek them out. Like I said, limited AI.

With the new quantum technology, 667 years is now down to minutes - not even an hour. The only problem now is actually getting it to practical applications. It is to the point that some problems can be (and have been) solved by quantum computers in less than an hour that we have no way to check the answer. It would take all the super computers of the world 200 years to double check the answer. It was understood that quantum computers would be fast, but this is somewhat past the dream. And Google is one of the leaders in quantum computing. Ever wonder what they will use it for?

For financial accounts, there's also the risk that your provider (or you) will be hacked. In addition to a complex password, consider 2 factor authentication where you are texted a 6 digit code to input after your password is validated.

One of my favorite sci fi writers has his characters refer to artificial intelligence devices as "artificial stupids" precisely because they are so literal they don't make the intuitive leaps that humans do routinely (even if often erroneously).

With due respect to all of the posters I think I am fortunate in not having the slightest clue what you are talking about. Maybe I AM getting older.

Have a great day,

Dennis

Yeah, I’m retired, too, but I have somewhat of a clue as to this topic. In my humble opinion, it’s fine for one to remain blissfully ignorant, but then such an individual has no business asking HOW when it is clear that some sort of computer processing is done.

Dennis, perhaps you’re just in a flippant mood, but your thought is something I could write with respect to over 90% of the topics created here. Would I be contributing anything substantive by doing so?

Sorry my friend but you are attributing to me something that was not in my selection of ideas at all. I was ONLY saying that I honestly have never heard of what was being discussed. You can think differently if it will help to assuage your feelings but that is the truth. There was no flippancy intended in my comment.

There is much these days that I have absolutely no idea what people are talking about. In todays list of topics is a subject about a person wanting a new computer. SATA is discussed as well as RAM and other things. While I have heard of those terms before I can never understand what exactly is being discussed. Now you can call me old fashioned or even stupid as well as ignorant if it makes you feel better. But remember we are all ignorant at some topics and I do excel at many.

Dennis,
I sincerely apologize if I offended you. I construed your "not having the slightest clue" comment as being negative. Given that I think the topic is enlightening. I interpreted your remark thusly.

NOW that you have clarified your remark as meaning that you "honestly [had] never heard of what was being discussed," it indicates merely ignorance. As I partly expressed before in other terms, ignorance is "okay" (so long as it's not one's "business" to know,) and blissful ignorance likewise. But I still don't understand your purpose in communicating such.

With no insinuations upon you intended whatsoever, I wonder who and more importantly, WHY, this topic just got booted from the Main Photography Discussion section to the General Chit-Chat section. Whether it was related to our posts is of interest to me, but a secondary matter. Is it that someone convinced the Admin that this topic has nothing to do with Photography? If so, I strongly disagree.

Amicably,
lev29

You did not offend me in the slightest bit. You simply misunderstood my comment and didn't take my meaning as honestly given until I actually SAID honestly. That made me wonder what I could have done to make my post seem more accurate but as I have said numerous times this is only an Internet forum. I doubt anyone takes anything on the forum seriously. It helps to remember that none of us are talking face t face and therefore we don't have hand signals, eye and facial clues to tip us off to whether or not the person we are addressing is irritated, pissed off to the point of killing someone, or just being facetious in nature. Most of the time it is impossible to tell. I have been known to joke with someone only to have them tell me later that they thought I was being absolutely honest. Normally when I joke it is with such a flabbergasting lie that nobody could possibly take me seriously, such as saying I just saw a pink hippopotamus pushing a baby carriage down the street. And yet some people have asked where was it. Such is the nature of human beings.

I HONESTLY have no idea how or why Admin does anything unless it is of the simplest nature that anyone can figure out such as taking obvious macro photos of a fly's eye from general photography and putting it into the macro section.

Have a great day,

Dennis
