Since we are traveling more, I decided to "go lighter" than my Canon 80D. I had some requirements that included good IQ, a viewfinder, something in the zoom range of my EF-S 18-135 (the G5X is equivalent to 24-120), fixed lens, RAW and small enough to fit in a pocket. I narrowed the choice down to a Sony RX100 VII and the Canon. After handling both, the Canon felt better in my (pretty large) hands, I was familiar with the menu structure of the Canon and the colors would be similar to what I'm used to. I bought it last Thursday at San Jose Camera (an actual brick and mortar building!) and here are some of my first photos taken Saturday. I'm very happy with it so far. I'll still use my 80D a lot when it is convenient, but plan on leaving the 80D at home on an upcoming Mediterranean cruise and other travels. There are times when I might have taken the 80D, but didn't want to deal with the bulk of it in my sling bag, but I would have taken a smaller camera; now I can. This goes along with "the best camera is the one you have with you."

When a kid my Dad was stationed at the Presideo for some time. I used to fish on that beach. Thanks for the memory. I’ll bet you’re going to be pleased with your new travel camera. I made a similar choice a couple years ago, although an Olympus PenF. It’s proven very handy. Have fun.

I'm glad it brought back fond memories. I think I made a good decision.

From these shots is looks like you made a great choice on the new Canon. The first one is interesting. I see the pooch and the surfboard, but no surfer.

Thanks for looking and commenting. I agree regarding the new camera. I'm surprised at the quality from such a small camera.

I'm not sure where the surfer is. In another photo that I didn't post there is someone walking along the beach nearby; maybe that's the surfer.

Well done. As noted elsewhere... these newer model compacts can take really nice photos.
