I own a Nikon D5oo and understand that you can use a battery other than the EN-EL 15a that comes with it with a longer life, I think its the 18? or something, does anyone know what Battery it is.

The Nikon grip for the D500 comes with a carrier for (I believe) the EN-EL18 battery. It has longer life and supports a faster continuous shooting rate. That battery also requires a different charger. I'm not sure of current prices, but by the time you buy the grip, battery, and charger, you will spend an amount approaching $900-$1000.

could it be the en-el 15b? It has a longer battery life.

The EN-EL15b battery added USB charging capability in the Z cameras. I don't believe it offers any capacity advantages over the EN-EL15a. Both of those versions do offer improved capacity over the original EN-EL15.

Yes, you CAN use the EN-EL 18 series batteries in the D500 battery grip, but that battery will require the BL-5 end cap to fit the grip.
The biggest downside is the cost of the charger for that 18 series battery.
I use them in both my D500 and D850 grips, and they do give between 5000 and 6000 shots per charge, about 4 times the shots of any of the 15 series batteries.

Yes on the EN-EL15b. Nikon is no longer doing the EN-EL15 or 15a. The EN-EL-18c can be used in some pro models or in some battery packs with an extended battery cover. (Needs expensive charger.)

I'm glad you mentioned this. I use these batteries in a D4s and D850. For some reason (probably lack of brain cells) I never thought to use them in the D500 grip. I will now.

NO, only the D850 offers this option. The D500 has a rate of 10 fps. already out of the box.

I bought third party battery ,charger, and battery grip for my D850 to get 9 frames per works perfect and have been using for over a year now for less than 200.00 for all three

you need the battery chamber cover because the battery grip does not have the right cover for the EL18 battery so that is what the replacement cover is for ..
