If no one has posted about this before, it is well worth becoming familiar with this story.

Your links came up errors but I googled it and it was what I remembered from something I read when I was a kid. What I found refreshed the details I had forgotten over the decades.

Thanks for the History
At the Philadelphia Navy Yard there is a church called the Chapel of the Four Chaplains. Oddly enough there is a Submarine Veteran Memorial placed in front of it.

These days courage is applied to the likes of Bruce Jenner whose so-called courage was because of having a sex change.I guess the definition of courage has changed since those days.

Why oh why are nations driven to settle their differences by horrendous bloodshed? Many of my relatives were sent to fight and died, while others came back forever damaged. Still others met their former "enemies" and became the best of friends. What is the evil force that makes us do things that we always regret with slogans like "never again" only to repeat them over and over? Incomprehensible!

Or, just to be left alone.

Desire to be left alone does not instigate war or violence in any way.
It is only started by those wanting power and control over others.

Or to get natural resources or to secure trade routes or because of religious intolerance or to free the enslaved or for retribution or to increase land holdings etc. It is the human condition.

I remember hearing this as a kid many decades ago. Back then it was folklore treasured by everyone.
Thanks for posting and reminding us.
