A jaunt around the cemetery with the dog this morning turned up a few critters and some squirrels to excite my collie.

Thanks Mark, I have read on the net that all the Black Legged ticks vector Lymes disease but I have no more knowledge than that. I avoid them, I didn't recognise this one as a tick until on the camera, it was quite small.

Thanks Tom, I imagine a creek is a good habitat for them, take care.

Nice shooting. A FYI. Black legged ticks are also called deer ticks in the US.
Ixodes scapularis. It and the other Ixodes carry Lymes and some other diseases.
They are commonly found on deer, deer mice, man, and his pets.
There is a vaccine for humans, and a chewable pill for dogs, to help prevent Lymes.
If you even suspect you have been bitten, look for the telltale red 'bullseye' at the bite site. If there, SEE YOUR DOCTOR.
Look for more info on line. There is plenty.

Thanks photosbytw, I'm jealous of your address, it sounds so romantic like the song with the same name.

Thanks Bill, I have checked myself and the dog over. I wondered how a tick like that would be on to top of an old gravestone. Could be from birds or squirrels I suppose, there are no other suitable hosts in the cemetery except for people and dogs- not on top of the soil anyway
