To those of you who know everything...

To all of you who know everything… and are put off when someone is tackling something new or confusing… and maybe has not spending all their hours keeping ups with every previous word posted on this forum…

You forget that there was a time when you were new at something… you asked about it… and you appreciated help in learning.

You were there once… and now have disdain for those asking for help.

Why don’t you just remain silent?

Barry

I hope I've not shown any disdain, ever. If brevity or directness has come across that way, I apologize.

Or at least give a brief effort of help.

The longer one is a member of UHH the more one becomes a ‘know-it-all’ and the more likely to complain about newbies who might not know too much about the Search option. What you put in the search box decides what you get which might not be much. Ya gotta know just the right words to use. Is that easy peasy or not.

You are missing the point.

This is not about how to ask a question. It's about those who show no patience with others who ask a question... wanting help... just because they do know the answer or it has been covered in the past.

There are those who are afraid to ask a question lest they be ridiculed.

That's what this is about.

I totally agree. When I first joined UHH I had a number of questions concerning new techniques I'd like to try. I would post a question here and most (if not all) of the replies were helpful. I noticed, as time went on, that more and more snarkyness invaded UHH. In my mind, the helpfulness set UHH apart from other sites. Of all the photo bulletin boards I joined (and there were a lot), UHH is the only one I visit daily. If I can offer help, I do so, otherwise I remain silent.

Well Barry, I don't know everything - not sure I know very much, so that must let me off. Most important though, when I do offer advice I research my answer first, and often learn something myself.

Most of the time the question is fine, but the answers that I see are out of this world. Some of the so called "know it alls" don't know sh!t or they spew all the wrong answers and information, and they only think their way is the right and only way. They sometimes send nasty PM's to people who tell it like it is when it's none of their business. I see a lot of bickering here too that can be quite annoying. The name calling is the worse.

Once again... Give advice or don't give advice. Either way. Give accurate advice or (maybe) not so accurate advice. Could be either... at least you try.

This is all about the spirit in your speaking.

Barry, while some places in the world are still "warm-and-fuzzy' (like Carolina. I spent my college years there), many are not. This forum is typically not as nasty as others I have experienced, but some "get frustrated" by folks who start new threads by asking questions about topics that are already under discussion.

I think most of the members here answer questions great. On a forum this size, your going to get a few who don't have patience.

Barry, I agree with some of what you wrote. I'm more than happy to share what I know. The "know" part comes from hours of study, experimentation, and field experience on my part. However, I'm reserved about the sharing part unless asked.

As the recipient of probably more than my share of excellent advice since joining UHH I must say that I've learned more here than in any class that I've taken. As happened only yesterday I was able to solve a problem with a camera that I don't often use thanks to the help of several UHH members who I've noticed are consistently thoughtful, thorough, and helpful in their responses regardless of the content of an honest question. I'm more than willing to ignore the few "know it alls" who lack both patience and understanding for the sake of the benefits derived from those who are compassionate and helpful.
