How to or an easy program to use to put captions on a photos?
Virtually any photo editing or word processing program will do the job. I would use Photoshop or Microsoft Publisher. Go to YouTube for lessons. That’s more practical than step by step on this forum

Do you mean visibly on the photo, or in the metadata?
I use a FREE program called Ribbet Photo editer . However I create a White box at the bottom of each photo than I type in Black text. I feel that putting text ON a photo detracts from the photo.
on the photo. I always put names on my prints. Since going digital, in years to come, I won't remember who is who.
For sending to publications, I use Photoshop to extend canvas size at bottom of print, to white, create a text box, and type in the caption / names etc.
Welcome to the Hog, Karen, enjoy.

As you consider the costs of various software ideas, now in this digital age, consider whether keywords (person(s), place, etc) in an image catalog is a better approach to "writing" captions onto the image.
Thanks, I am enjoying the forum.
